Gray solar array a powerful force in town
A ground-mounted solar array near the transfer station has generated enough clean energy as of Aug. 11 to offset 1.09 million pounds of CO2 emissions and enough power to operate an average home for nearly 76 years.
The array was commissioned in December 2020, when Gray partnered with South Portland-based ReVision Energy. Each year, the system offsets about 475,995 pounds of carbon, the equivalent of over 607,446 miles driven in a gas-powered car. The 360-kilowatt solar project is comprised of 960 panels and generates over 485,000 kilowatt-hours of solar energy every year.

Book Jar raffle
The drawing for Book Jar prizes will be Saturday, Aug. 20 at the library for patrons that guessed which book is represented by the clues in the jars. Winners will receive a B & R Dairy Bar gift card. All book jar creators will also receive a prize.
Bean suppah
First Congregational Church of Gray will be hosting a Saturday Night Bean Supper at 5 p.m. Aug. 27, at the Parish House, 5 Brown St.
The menu includes red hot dogs, baked pea beans, biscuits, a variety of casseroles and salads and an assortment of desserts and drinks.
Reservations are required by calling Carol at 650-9093; the cut-off to reserve is 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24. The cost is $10, payable at the door. The building is handicapped-accessible.
Big need for blood
The American Legion Post 86 has renewed its partnership with the American Red Cross Northern New England Region and will be conducting its first post-COVID Community Blood Drive from noon to 5 p.m. Aug. 29, upstairs in the meeting hall at American Legion Post #86, 15 Lewiston Road. Please support this vital endeavor as blood stores are low. Register in advance at redcross.org.
Food truck Fridays
White Fox Taverna food truck will be at Maine Wildlife Park Friday, Aug. 19, and Sept. 2, and Shut up N’ eat it will be onsite Aug. 26. Both mobile eateries will be parked at the park from 1-7 p.m.
Feedback wanted
Gray officials want to hear about the visioning process and the block party held July 29 and ask residents to take a few minutes to complete a survey at graymaine.org. The results will help the town plan similar events.
First day of school
The first day of school for all Memorial, Dunn and Russell school students will be Aug. 31, along with grades 5 and 9. Grades 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 12 will start Sept. 1. See msad 15.org for complete information.
