The town of Gray will use a $500,000 brownfields assessment grant to evaluate the Gray Village Center intersection and the Route 100/Portland Road corridors, according to Maine Congresswoman Chellie Pingree’s office.
Property is designated as a “brownfield” if the presence or potential presence of hazardous substances, pollutants or contaminants could complicate construction there.
The funds are part of $13.8 million in federal money from the Environmental Protection Agency used to assess and clean up sites in Maine’s first district.
This is the town’s first grant from the EPA to address brownfields. Other grants include $3.9 million for state grant and loan assistance to clean up and redevelopment projects throughout the state.
