The Maine State Police are investigating the death of a 14-year-old girl in Mount Vernon as a homicide, and are seeking information about a stolen car in connection with the case.
The unidentified girl was found dead at a home shortly after 6 p.m. Monday, according to a statement issued Wednesday night by state police.
The homeowner called police after returning to the residence and finding the girl.
The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office received the call and contacted the State Police Major Crimes Unit, which investigates all homicides and suspicious deaths in Maine.
Officials said evidence technicians and detectives worked into the early morning hours Tuesday looking for evidence and conducting interviews.
Police also began searching the Kennebec County area overnight for a red 2010 Chevrolet Impala with a Maine “Support Wildlife” specialty registration plate of 510-AVW after the homeowner reported one of her vehicles was missing from her driveway.
That car had been taken without permission Monday afternoon, police said, and the stolen car was found Tuesday morning in the nearby town of Wayne.
State police detectives said they want to know if anyone saw the car Monday night or Tuesday morning.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta conducted an autopsy of the girl Tuesday and ruled the death a homicide, police said.
Police have not disclosed additional details, saying they are still investigating the death.
Anyone with information should call the Maine State Police at 207-624-7076.
