It was a strong spring sports season for local athletes, and many were recently honored as postseason all-stars.

Here’s a recap:

Baseball

Freeport’s baseball team reached the Class B state final and the Falcons placed senior pitcher Blaine Cockburn and senior second baseman Keigan Shea on the Western Maine Conference Class B all-star first-team. They were joined by Cape Elizabeth junior pitcher Curtis Sullivan; Greely senior pitcher Zach Johnston, senior catcher Ryan Kolben, sophomore third baseman Marky Axelsen, senior outfielder Brooks Williams and senior utilityman Max Cloutier; and Yarmouth senior first baseman Gibby Sullivan and junior pitcher Liam Hickey.

The Class B second-team featured Cape Elizabeth junior first baseman Owen Tighe; Freeport senior pitcher Nathan Abbott and senior catcher Kempton von Glinsky-Gregoire; Greely sophomore outfielder Jackson Leding; and Yarmouth sophomore pitcher Sam Lowenstein, sophomore second baseman Matt Gautreau, senior third baseman Jack McCosh, senior outfielder Matt Robichaud and sophomore utilityman Andrew Cheever.

Greely’s Ryan Kolben was named WMC Class B Player of the Year.

Freeport’s Blaine Cockburn and Greely’s Zach Johnston were the WMC co-Class B Pitchers of the Year.

The WMC Class C/D first-team included Waynflete/North Yarmouth Academy senior outfielder Payton Smith, sophomore outfielder Cole Lambert, junior outfielder Daxton St. Hilaire and junior utilityman Cooper St. Hilaire.

The second-team featured Waynflete/NYA senior Liam Slocumb, junior Jack Byrnes and sophomore Connor Wolverton.

Waynflete/NYA’s Payton Smith was named the WMC Class C/D Pitcher of the Year.

In the Southwestern Maine Activities Association, the first-team included Falmouth first baseman Patrick Gill and pitcher Dom Tracy, Portland shortstop Henry Bibeau and designated hitter Andrew Legere, Scarborough infielder TJ Liponis and outfielder Ben Seguin, and South Portland pitcher Andrew Heffernan.

The second-team featured Cheverus outfielder Richie Tremble; Falmouth pitcher Eli Cowperthwaite; Scarborough first baseman Mason Porter, outfielder Ashton Blanchette and pitcher Erik Swenson; and South Portland second baseman Jack Houle, infielder Johnny Poole, catcher Richie Gilboy and pitcher Nolan Hobbs.

Cheverus’ Kevin Connolly, Deering’s Avery Lawrence, Falmouth’s Bennett Smith, Portland’s Colby Winship, Scarborough’s Thomas Donahue and South Portland’s Ryan Thurber were honorable mentions.

Falmouth catcher Ethan Hendry and shortstop Brady Coyne, Portland outfielder Andrew Brewer, Scarborough infielder TJ Liponis, and South Portland outfielders Alex Domingos and Ryan Thurber made the SMAA All-Defensive team.

Cheverus’ Kevin Connolly, Braden Smith and Richie Tremble; Deering’s Eric Christopher, Drew Hamilton and Qwest Newhall; Falmouth’s Patrick Gill; Portland’s Ryan Becker, Grant Crosby, Colby Winship and Liam Winship; Scarborough’s Thomas Donahue and TJ Liponis; and South Portland’s Kenny Carlisle and Jack Houle qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

South Portland’s Andrew Heffernan won the SMAA Edson Hadlock Award as the Most Valuable Pitcher.

Softball

Scarborough’s A.J. Swett was named to the SMAA softball first-team.

The SMAA softball first-team included Scarborough outfielder A.J. Swett and South Portland outfielder Ella Nickerson.

Portland pitcher Sadie Armstrong, and Scarborough pitcher Natalie Moynihan, first baseman Angelina Pizzella and outfielder Calynn Gendreau made the second-team.

Cheverus’ Hayley Jordan and Kadynne Smith, Deering’s Katie Gallagher and Anna Krush, Falmouth’s Justine Means and Ventura Van Zandt, Portland’s Halle Chase and Hannah Hawkes, Scarborough’s Katie Roy and Maddie Russo, and South Portland’s Elise Connor and Mia Micucci were honorable mentions.

Cheverus’ Olivia Bradford, Hayley Jordan, Cassie Novak and Sage Soucy, Deering’s Katie Gallagher, Anna Krush and Bela Nieves; Falmouth’s Emily Charest, Maddy Cooney, Kate Kinley and Olivia Rogers; Portland’s Halle Chase and Vanessa Connolly; Scarborough’s Calynn Gendreau, Gabriella Giftos, Katie Roy, Morgan Scoville and AJ Swett; and South Portland’s Madelyn Jamieson and Ashley Thurston qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

Deering’s Bela Nieves won the SMAA Peter Meager Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of team dedication and sportsmanship as well as success on the athletic field.

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth senior pitcher Kathryne Clay and senior third baseman Kat Callahan, Freeport sophomore shortstop Rosie Panenka and senior leftfielder Brook Pawlowski, Greely sophomore pitcher Lily Rawnsley, and Yarmouth freshman centerfielder Julia Lawwill made the first-team.

Cape Elizabeth sophomore shortstop Sophia Chung and senior second baseman Clara Parker, Freeport senior first baseman Jaclyn Burke and freshman centerfielder Celia Cobb, Greely junior infielder Maia Wright, and Yarmouth junior infielder Emma Butsch were second-team selections.

Boys’ lacrosse

North Yarmouth Academy’s Henry Bergeron was one of the state’s top defensemen this spring and was honored by the Western Maine Conference in addition to being named an All-American in boys’ lacrosse.

Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ lacrosse team repeated as Class B state champion last month, and the Capers placed senior attack Nic Boudreau, senior midfielders Colin Campbell and Tiernan Lathrop, and junior defenseman Nate Patterson on the WMC Class A/B first-team. They were joined by Yarmouth senior attack Peter Psyhogeos, senior middie Steven Fulton, junior defenseman Owen Redfield and senior longstick middie Cam Miller; and Greely senior defenseman Andrew Boese, senior goalie Spencer Osgood and senior faceoff specialist Charter Sasseville.

The second-team featured Cape Elizabeth sophomore attack Keegan Lathrop, senior middie Caden Lee and junior faceoff specialist Sebastian Moon; and Yarmouth junior attack Killian Marsh and sophomore attack Colter Olson.

The WMC Class C first-team included NYA senior attack Caleb Waterman and junior attack Brayden Warde, senior middie Elliott Oney, senior defenseman Henry Bergeron, and junior goalie Jack Curtis and junior middie Roan Hopkins of state champion Waynflete.

The second-team featured Freeport freshman attack Randall Walker, senior middie Daniel Casale and junior goalie Adam Clough; NYA junior defenseman Seamus Rohde; and Waynflete junior attack Seth Cloutier, sophomore middie Jacob Woodman, junior defenseman Liam Anderson and junior LSM Jasper Curtis.

Freeport junior middie Jordan Knighton, NYA  senior attack Chas Rohde and Waynflete sophomore attack Nils Burton-Johanson were honorable mentions.

In the SMAA, Cheverus senior attack Wyatt Header and senior middie Nico Nason; Deering sophomore middie Andrew Burke; Falmouth freshman defenseman Indi Backman, sophomore middie Caden Barnard, junior goalie Drew Noyes, senior attack Rory Skillin-Lanou and senior defenseman Ben Wentworth; Portland senior LSM Carlos Braceras and senior defenseman Herbie Bryant; Scarborough senior defenseman James Day, sophomore goalie Ben Kerbel, senior defenseman Andrew Lancaster, senior attack Finn Pedersen and senior middie Sam Rumelhart; and South Portland senior middie Cullen Adams, junior defenseman Brady Angell, junior attack Jack Dreifus, junior goalie Ben Kieu and junior middie Lucas Mehlhorn were all-star selections.

South Portland’s Dan Hanley joined Thornton Academy’s Ryan Hersey as SMAA co-Coach of the Year.

Cape Elizabeth’s Nic Boudreau, Colin Campbell and Tiernan Lathrop; Falmouth’s Ben Wentworth; NYA’s Henry Bergeron; and Yarmouth’s Steven Fulton were named All-Americans.

Girls’ lacrosse

Greely’s Carley Ferentz led the Rangers to the state title and made the Western Maine Conference girls’ lacrosse first-team.

Greely’s girls’ lacrosse team won its first championship this century last month and the Rangers placed senior attack Carley Ferentz, junior attack Lauren Dennen, junior middie Charlotte Taylor and junior middie/defender Allie Read on the WMC first-team. They were joined by Cape Elizabeth senior goalie Elise Branch, senior middie Claire McDonald and senior middie Annaliese Rudberg; Freeport senior attack Megan Driscoll, senior defender Riley Simon, senior middie Savannah Tracy and junior middie Kate Tracy, senior attack Maggie Holt, senior attack Emma Sharp, and junior middie Vy Tran of Class C champion NYA; Waynflete senior middie Jesse Connors, senior goalie Emily Girard and senior middie Lolie Millspaugh; and Yarmouth senior middie Katelyn D’Appolonia, junior middie Sadie Carnes, junior defender Sara Wentzel and sophomore middie Aine Powers.

Cape Elizabeth senior Ellie Gagne, Freeport senior Kyla Havey and junior Piper Williams, Greely sophomores Kylie Crocker and Eva Williams, NYA senior Lila Jackson, Waynflete sophomore Tilsley Kelly, and Yarmouth senior Juliet Meas and sophomore Lauren Keaney were honorable mention selections.

In the SMAA, Cheverus’ Reese Belanger, Lucy Johnson and Riley O’Mara; Deering’s Shay Rosenthal, Falmouth’s Whitney Adams, Sloane Ginevan, Sydney Shiben and Peaches Stucker; Portland’s Bobby Sue Villani; Scarborough’s Natalie Bilodeau, Darby Stolz and Kayleigh York; and South Portland’s Maddie Fitzherbert and Pearl Freidland-Farley made the first-team.

Cheverus’ Mackenzie Cash, Deering’s Anja Franck and Morgan Shibles, Falmouth’s Kinsey Barry and Molly Scribner, Portland’s Taysia Blazejewski and Phoebe Knoll, Scarborough’s Ashley Farrington and Molly Henderson, and South Portland’s Barrett Backman and Emily Keefe were honorable mentions.

Outdoor track

Cape Elizabeth’s Tori Hews had a superb outdoor track season and made the Western Maine Conference all-star team.

Scarborough’s boys’ outdoor track team won another Class A state title this spring, and the Red Storm had several athletes make the SMAA first-team, including Zach Barry (800 and mile), Adam Bendetson (2-mile), Nicholas Connolly (discus), Jayden Flaker (110 hurdles and 300 hurdles), Toby Martin (pole vault), and the Red Storm’s 4×100 relay team of Connolly, Flaker, Noah Batoosingh and Parker Killiard. They were joined on the first-team by Cheverus’ Frank Morang (long jump and triple jump) and the Stags’ 4×400 relay team (Matthew Fogg, Brendan Rogers, Jesse Cadigan and Andrew Griffiths), South Portland’s Amir Broadus (shot put), and Portland’s 4×800 relay team (Nathan Blades, Jason Hargesheimer, Nicholas Paterniti and Ben Prestes).

The second-team included Cheverus’ Griffiths (400) and Scarborough’s Connolly (shot put) and Flaker (200).

The third-team featured Cheverus’ Griffiths (300 hurdles), Morang (100) and Bryan Stark-Chessa (mile), Falmouth’s Elias Grover (discus) and Joseph Rouhana (pole vault); Portland’s Blades (800 and 2-mile); Scarborough’s Flaker (shot put); and South Portland’s Arnaud Sioho (triple jump), Max Kladov (pole vault) and Lucas Lefebvre (racewalk).

The SMAA All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Matthew Bellantoni, Jesse Cadigan, Andrew Griffiths and Frank Morang; Deering’s Deven Abrams, Israk Ayasin, Vaughn Howard, Emmanuel Saili, Samuel Scala and Willem van Oosterum; Falmouth’s Charlie Adams, Will Addison, Paul Calgani, Andrew Christie, Owen Davis, Everett Hyde, Logan Ross, Joey Rouhana and Andrew Yoo; Portland’s George Theall; Scarborough’s Zach Barry, Nicholas Connolly, Taylor Daigle, Jayden Flaker, Justin Liang, Noah Libby, Toby Martin and William Pulvino; and South Portland’s Lucas Lefebvre and Thomas Wilson.

In the WMC, the first-team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Owen Patry (2-mile), Freeport’s Henry Horne (800 and high jump) and Reece Perry (pole vault), Greely’s Gage Cooney (300 hurdles), NYA’s Noah Hallward-Rough (2-mile), and Yarmouth’s Frazier Dougherty (100, 200 and 400) and Ethan Hennig (100 and shot put).

The second-team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Will Fougere (racewalk), Greely’s Evan Dutil (100) and Kennett Adande Kinti (shot put), NYA’s Joaquim Bila (200 and long jump) and Will Barmby (800 and javelin), and Yarmouth’s Owen Gillam (high jump).

On the girls’ side, the SMAA first-team featured Portland’s Anneliese Collin (300 hurdles) and Scarborough’s Emerson Flaker (400).

The second-team included Cheverus’ Leska Whitmarsh (pole vault), Deering’s Naomie Bisimwa (discus) and Saya Breiting-Brown (100 hurdles), and Scarborough’s Caroline Fallona (100).

The third-team featured Falmouth’s Ruby Prentiss (discus), Portland’s Samantha Moore (mile), and Scarborough’s Flaker (200) and Emma Saraceno (long jump).

The SMAA All-Academic team included Cheverus’ Arina Matkevich, Lydia Niedermeyer, Norah Slattery, Grace Turner and Leska Whitmarsh; Deering’s Megan Cunningham, Emma Hallee, Courtney Jackson and Kayla Jackson; Falmouth’s Lila Findlay and Natalie Howard; Portland’s Vanessa Connolly; and Scarborough’s Sophia Brooks, Alexis Clement, Una Djuranovic, Emma Goodwin, Elisabeth LeFebvre, Emma Saraceno, Lily Stone and Kennedy Todd.

The WMC first-team included Cape Elizabeth’s Tori Hews (100 and 200) and Hadley Mahoney (800); Freeport’s Molly Cobbs (pole vault); Greely’s Lia Traficonti (long jump and triple jump); Maine Coast Waldorf’s Nora Goldberg-Courtney (mile and 2-mile); NYA’s Gracia Bila (200, triple jump and 100 hurdles) Emma Haims (800) and Marion Robbins (shot put).

The second-team featured Cape Elizabeth’s Mahoney (mile) and Emma Young (2-mile); Freeport’s Avery Baker-Schlendering (high jump) and Lucy Bradford (pole vault); Greely’s Katie Carlson (300 hurdles), Abigail Jacobson (200) and Elle Jowett (100); MCW’s Haims (400) and NYA’s Madilyn Onorato (high jump).

Tennis

Waynflete’s Henry Hart helped the Flyers to another Class C boys’ tennis state title and made the Western Maine Conference all-star team.

Yarmouth’s boys’ tennis team won a third consecutive Class B state title last month and placed Will Best and Quinn Federele on the WMC first-team, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Eben Harrison; Greely’s Leif Boddie, Peter Rinehart and Charles Segal; and NYA’s Bryce Poulin.

The second-team featured Matt Adey and Henry Kerr of now 14-time Class C champion Waynflete, along with Cape Elizabeth’s Gabe Berman, Freeport’s Teo Steverlynck-Horne, NYA’s Noah Silander and Yarmouth’s Asher Lockwood.

NYA’s Aidan Farion and Nate Oney, Waynflete’s Ed Cox and Henry Hart, and Yarmouth’s Sutter Augur and Ethan Lomard made the WMC doubles all-star team.

In the SMAA, Deering’s Daniel Landry and Falmouth’s Sam Yoon made the first singles team.

Cheverus’ Anton Behuniak and Portland’s Dominic Walls were named to the second singles team.

Cheverus’ Calvin Cutler and Jack Williams made the SMAA second doubles team.

Cheverus’ Bao Bui, Jackson Krieger, Odan Strock and Jackson Williams; Deering’s Harrison Greene and Carlos Hernandez; Scarborough’s Ethan DiBiase, Krishna Mattaparthi, Jayson Thatcher and Harsha Yarram; and South Portland’s Diagen Burton, Jake Goodwin, Cameron Laverdiere, Michael Mitton and Dominic Salow qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Aurora Milton and Elena Rosenberg, Freeport’s Brielle Hodgkin and Kaitlyn Mosier, NYA’s Emma Rothrock, and Waynflete’s Anna Farmer and Jenny Morrill made the WMC doubles all-star team.

In the SMAA, Falmouth’s Charlotte Williamson, Portland’s Jenna Lederer and Scarborough’s Amber Woods made the first singles team.

Scarborough’s Sanibel Shinners made the singles second team.

Falmouth’s Liv McHugh and Avery Quinn, and Falmouth’s Elise Gearan and Marissa LeFevre made the doubles first team.
