Old Red Church open for tours, holding benefit yard sale
First Parish Meetinghouse – also known as The Old Red Church – is open for tours at 55 Oak Hill Road until October from noon to 4 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays. Tour one of Maine’s historical landmarks for a suggested donation of $5 per person or $10 for the whole family. Donations benefit the Standish Historical Society.
Support the Standish Historical Society and check out wonderful antiques and treasures at amazing prices at a yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 23 at First Parish Old Red Church.
All that jazz
Blue Fuse, an acoustic jazz band based in Portland, will be playing a set from 6:30-8 p.m. July 20, when Standish Parks and Recreation hosts a free, family-friendly summer concert in a series of live music performances at the Steep Falls Village Park Gazebo.
The gazebo is located in the center of Steep Falls at the corner of Routes 11 and 113, 10 minutes west of Standish Corner and across from Eddie’s Market and Sweeties Ice Cream. Portable bathrooms are available at Mill Street Park. Bring your own chairs, blankets and snacks.
Local man leads Irish Heritage Center
Robert Kearney of Standish was elected chairperson of the Board of Directors at Maine Irish Heritage Center, a Portland-based community resource centered around Irish heritage and culture.
Also at the recent annual meeting, James A. McClay of Steep Falls was elected vice chairperson, Lois Galgay Reckitt of South Portland was elected treasurer and Ann O’Hagan of Portland was elected secretary.
Newly elected board members are Parnell W. Terry of Gorham, Susan J. Flaherty of Portland and Fiona O’Grady of Portland.
The following individuals were reelected for a three-year term: Brian McCambridge of Westbrook, Lois Galgay Reckitt of South Portland, Jean Haney of Portland and Janine Manning of South Portland.
Through educational programs, community events and genealogical resources with library archives containing over 4,000 books and other media forms dedicated to Irish culture, Maine Irish Heritage Center strives to keep the Irish community alive in Maine.
Cribbage tournaments
The Standish Fish and Game Club is hosting cribbage tournaments from 6:30-9 p.m. July 20 at Guff’s Grub and Pub on the corner of Northeast and Richville roads. The prize is $10, half of which will benefit an annual scholarship fund awarded to rising graduates.
