Hart

Hart was Waynflete’s heart and soul this season as the Flyers saved their best for last and sprung the tournament’s biggest surprise.

Hart, an unselfish point guard, first made his presence felt on the Waynflete varsity as a sophomore, helping the Flyers reach the Class C South Final. After his junior campaign was limited by COVID, Hart did it all this winter, averaging 12 points, 3.5 steals and 3 assists per game.

Highlights included 14 points in a season-opening win over Sacopee Valley, 12 points and five steals in a victory over North Yarmouth Academy, 21 points in a second win over NYA, 18 points in a loss to Freeport, and 20 points in a win over Seacoast Christian.

Hart then sparkled in the playoffs, scoring 22 points in Waynflete’s overtime victory over Madison in the preliminary round, then tallying seven points, five assists and three steals in a stunning upset win over top-ranked Winthrop in the quarterfinals. The Flyers lost to Monmouth Academy in the semifinals, but they certainly made their mark.

“We believed in each other,” Hart said. “The second half of the season, we had a major turnaround. We have quite a young team so we got our footing the first half of the season, but the second half, we played much more like ourselves.”

Hart, who also won multiple state titles in soccer, established quite a legacy of success during his time in a Flyers uniform.

Coach Rich Henry’s comment: “We don’t usually track minutes played per game, but Henry was so valuable to us that we really couldn’t afford to not have him on the floor, and that was true for his junior season as well. Henry led by both word and deed. He worked just as hard in practice as he did in games and it set the tone for the rest of the team. Henry’s skills and confidence grew over his time on the varsity. I remember his first game in Augusta as a sophomore, he missed a couple of jump shots that, if there was any justice, would have fallen. By his senior year, it seemed like every shot he took went in. That just goes to show how he developed as a varsity player and leader. I attribute a significant part of our team’s ability to weather the tough section of our schedule where we were battling Yarmouth, Lake Region, Poland, Fryeburg and other bigger programs, to the attitude and approach Henry brought to the team. We felt like we were improving in each game over the course of the season and getting prepared for the tournament. It can be hard to stay positive in those situations, but Henry really helped carry the message of our improvement and to keep working to the rest of the team. I’ve had the great honor of coaching some truly outstanding guards during my time at Waynflete – Harry Baker-Connick, Abel Alemayo, Willy Burdick, Milo Belleau and Will Nelligan come to mind – and Henry Hart is deservedly in that group. He represents the total package: athletic, intelligent, coachable and a leader.”

Good

Good played an integral role in another terrific season for the Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland co-op girls’ hockey team.

The squad would make a run all the way to the regional final, and Good was a factor on both ends of the ice. She finished with five goals and seven assists.

Highlights included a goal and two assists in a season-opening victory over St. Dom’s, a goal in a come-from-behind win over Edward Little/Leavitt, a goal in a win over Cheverus, an assist in an overtime win over eventual state champion Lewiston and a goal in a regular season-ending victory over York.

Cape/Waynflete/SP went on to beat Portland/Deering with ease in the South Region quarterfinals, then had to go four overtimes to survive Falmouth in an all-time classic in the semifinals. The squad was eventually beaten by Scarborough in the regional final, but it was a memorable and triumphant campaign nonetheless.

And there will be more. With two seasons left to excel, Good is on the brink of becoming one of the state’s premier players.

Coach Bob Mills’ comment: “As one of our top forwards, Becca plays a vital role on our team. She consistently competes at a high level and works hard to improve her overall game. We depend on Becca to be on the ice when we need a goal or, more importantly, when we are trying to prevent the other team from scoring. Becca is well respected by her teammates and coaches and will provide leadership in the coming seasons.”
