School administrators said they have made sure vandalism “does not go unchecked” after students from another district drew large swastikas on two cafeteria tables at Greely Middle School in Cumberland.
Students from a school that officials would not identify drew on the tables during the weekend of Feb. 12 when the school hosted a junior varsity tournament, according to School Administrative District 51 Superintendent Jeff Porter. Players took breaks in the cafeteria.
SAD 51 administrators are “pleased” with how the other school district has worked with them in following up with the students responsible.
Cumberland Police said since the vandalism was done with pencil and did not cause any property damage, it was not considered a criminal matter.
“Obviously, some of the imagery was inappropriate, offensive and hateful and we are glad that the administration of the district where the students are enrolled are taking their responsibilities seriously,” Police Chief Charles Rumsey said, adding, “We are not identifying the district involved.”
Porter did not respond to a message asking why the school involved was not identified and the specific action taken against the students.
