CUMBERLAND
Learn about shell middens and their history
Prince Memorial Library will offer two virtual presentations by historian and author Thomas Bennett on the historical significance of Maine’s shell middens, particularly those found on Chebeague Island and the Cumberland mainland.
The first online talk, “What Do We Know About Shell Middens and What Do They Tell Us About Our Past?” will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The second talk, entitled “The Middens of Casco Bay,” will be April 7 at 6:30 p.m.
Shell middens, accumulations of shells, bones, and artifacts found along Maine’s mainland and island coasts, offer historians a glimpse into the lives of Indigenous people who lived on the land long ago. Bennett’s presentation is offered in collaboration with the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust. Register for one or both on the Prince Memorial Library’s website at princememorial.org.
