Maddie Fitzpatrick scored 22 of her 27 points in the first half as second-seeded Cheverus rolled to a 72-45 win over No. 7 Portland in a Class AA North girls’ basketball quarterfinal Thursday night.

Lillian Singleton added 11 points for Cheverus (15-3), which rolled out to a 40-17 halftime advantage. The Stags will face No. 3 Hampden Academy in the semifinals Wednesday at Cross Insurance Arena.

Liz Yugu scored 21 points, with four 3-pointers, for Portland (4-15). Naulissa Tuza tossed in 10 points.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

SOUTH PORTLAND 83, NOBLE 33: JP Estrella scored 23 points to pace the top-seeded Red Riots (18-1) to a win over the eighth-seeded Knights (0-18) in a Class AA South quarterfinal at South Portland.

Jaelen Jackson and Owen Maloney dropped in 15 points apiece for South Portland, which advances to play No. 4 Bonny Eagle at 8:45 p.m. next Thursday at Portland’s Cross Insurance Arena.

Bryce Guitard scored nine points for Noble.

MASSABESIC 40, SANFORD 38: James Saccuzzo scored 10 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter as the sixth-seeded Mustangs (7-10) upset the third-seeded Spartans (10-6) in a Class AA South quarterfinal at Sanford.

The game was close throughout, but Massabesic opened some breathing room when Saccuzzo got eight straight points midway through the fourth. The Mustangs held on from there as they advanced to the semifinals Thursday against No. 2 Thornton Academy at Cross Insurance Arena.

Isaiah Searles added eight points and Jake Raymond had seven for Massabesic.

Sanford got 14 points from Justin Kennedy and 13 from Connor Curcio.

OXFORD HILLS 43, BANGOR 42: Teigan Pelletier’s 3-pointer with less than five seconds remaining gave the second-seeded Vikings (16-3) a win over the No. 7 Rams (6-13) in a Class AA North quarterfinal in Paris.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

THORNTON ACADEMY 6, SOUTH PORTLAND 0: Shane Bergeron connected twice during a four-goal first period for the Golden Trojans (10-4) in a win over South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete (10-6) at Troubh Ice Arena in Portland.

Evan Beaudette and Colby Bilodeau also scored in the first, and Kyle LeSieur and Alex St. John padded the lead in the second period.

GREELY 3, CAPE ELIZABETH 2: Gage Cooney’s unassisted power-play goal early in the third period lifted the Rangers (12-3) past the Capers (8-4-1) at Family Ice Center in Falmouth.

Greely grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Landon Werner and Evan Dutil.

Cape tied it on a pair of goals by Brady Hanisko.
