The Westbrook Fire Department has received a $18,681 grant to buy a replacement boat for river rescues.
The department will purchase a 14-foot aluminum boat with a 30 horsepower jet-powered motor with the grant from FireHouse Subs, a restaurant chain known for donating and providing grants to local fire departments. A FireHouse Subs location recently opened at Rock Row.
The boat will allow the department to get into areas with low clearance or water levels using internal propellers that don’t put those being rescueed at risk, according to interim Assistant Chief Gary Wagner.
The grant also covers a new 14-foot trailer to transport the boat.
