SCARBOROUGH — Brooke Gerry had just been born the last time Windham’s softball team beat perennial powerhouse Scarborough. 

But Wednesday afternoon at Kippy Mitchell Sports Complex, Windham’s freshman ace did everything in her power to ensure that the Eagles defeated the Red Storm for the first time since 2006. 

Gerry singled on the game’s first pitch, scored the first run and was dominant on the mound, throwing a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts in an 8-2 win. 

“(Gerry) was impressive,” said Scarborough Coach Tom Griffin. “She certainly impressed the heck out of me. She’s the real deal. She threw fast and had great movement. She’s the complete package.” 

Windham (12-2), which belted 18 hits, scored twice in the top of the first. After Gerry singled, Ella Wilcox followed with the first of her two hits and freshman catcher Jaydn Kimball lined the first pitch she saw from Red Storm starter Jenna Giguere to center to load the bases. Ellie Wilson then grounded a single to center, driving home Gerry and Wilcox. 

After Gerry struck out the side in the bottom of the first, the Eagles made it 5-0 in the second. Gerry tripled home Amanda Foss, who had doubled, then scored on Kimball’s double off the center-field fence. Wilson singled to right to drive in Kimball. 

“I told the girls to be aggressive today,” said Windham Coach Fred Wilcox. “They work hard on their mechanics and they came out here today and saw the ball well.” 

The Red Storm (10-3) managed just one hit and one walk in the first five innings.

Windham stretched its lead to 7-0 in the sixth, as Gerry hit a sacrifice fly and Wilcox singled in a run. 

“We’ve worked hard on our hitting all season and it’s finally all coming together,” said Gerry.

Gerry’s only shaky inning was the sixth, as two errors, a bloop hit and a passed ball set the stage for a run to score on A.J. Swett’s sacrifice fly. Scarborough then loaded the bases and brought slugger Angelina Pizzella to the plate. Gerry struck her out, but a passed ball on strike three resulted in a second run. Gerry then got Calynn Gendreau to line out to right to end the threat. 

After Foss hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh, Gerry struck out the side in the bottom half. 

“The insurance runs let me know I had a couple runs to give and if I gave them up, it was OK,” said Gerry. “Everything felt good for me today.” 

“(Brooke’s) pretty awesome,” added Fred Wilcox. “I’ve worked with her for four or five years and she’s progressed every single year.  

“She should be dominant in this conference for a long time.”
