Yard sale, memorial observance this weekend

The Arundel Historical Society will host two events this Memorial Day weekend.
A yard sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Greenbrook Farm, 68 Greenbrook Lane, just off Alfred Road, Route 111, next to Hill Road entrance. This event directly benefits the Arundel Historical Society.
A Memorial Day Observance will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Veterans Memorial, located at the Fire Station, at Limerick and Mountain roads. The program includes a reading of the Arundel Veteran’s Honor roll, some words of remembrance, a wreath laying and the playing of taps.

Lott String Quartet first up at Arts Center

Denmark Arts Center will kick off its summer music series at Bicentennial Park with a performance of contemporary and romantic classical music by the New Orleans-based Lott String Quartet at 4 p.m. Saturday.
The quartet comprises Kurt Munstedt, Benjamin Thacher, Rachel Hsieh, and Luke Fleming.
This is a rain or shine performance. Bring your lawn chair and weather appropriate clothing. There will be no programs for the afternoon performance, nor an intermission, in keeping with CDC guidelines.

Online premiere to feature three short comedies by Elizabeth Guffey

Freeport Players will present its online premiere “Future … Present … Past: Three Short Comedies” by Maine playwright Elizabeth Guffey, with streaming beginning Friday and running through June 30.
The comedies are “Alien Autopsy,” in which a science fair project gets really, really interesting; “I Love You,” in which there’s nothing like a DMV to stir up emotions; and “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead,” in which Jimmy’s at the bar, as usual, when an old flame turns up.
Tickets are priced from $9 to $14. The show includes an interview with Maine playwright Elizabeth Guffey.

Get your tomato plants, yard sale items at church event

The First Congregational Church of Kennebunkport is holding its “200 Fabulous Tomato Plants, Perennials & Yard Sale” from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church’s parking lot at 141 North St.
The event will feature sales of a variety for tomato plants, including Big League, Stellar, Tasti-lee, Jasper, Mountain Magic, and Fantastico, grown locally by Bill Harmon. Among the yard sale items will be several pieces from the Charles Dickens Village Series-Dept. 56.

Food park opens for season Thursday

Congdon’s After Dark will give free doughnuts to all first responders and medical personnel during Memorial Day weekend as the popular food truck park kicks off its fifth season at 4 p.m. Thursday on Route One. The food park, located outside Congdon’s Doughnuts Family Restaurant & Bakery, hosts up to 10 food trucks in the evenings from late-May until early-October.
Every guest who identifies themselves as a first responder or medical professional at Congdon’s Sugar Shack food truck will receive a free doughnut.
Food park staff will continue to wear masks initially. Guests will also have to continue to use masks when indoors, including the beer garden and bathroom facilities.
More than 25 food trucks are scheduled to join the park for the 2021 season.
Several popular park events will return this season as well, including weekly car shows and fundraisers. Tithing Tuesdays will take place each week from June to August, with a new nonprofit receiving 10 percent of revenue from the food trucks each week. The weekly Classic Car Cruise-ins will be back again, featuring 20-30 classic cars each Monday starting June 21.
Guests are encouraged to go to the park’s website, cadfoodtrucks.com, or social media pages for schedule details and to see the daily truck lineup.
The park will be open Thursday through Sunday from May 27 to June 17, when daily service will begin.

Online talk about white sharks

Wells Public Library, at 1434 Post Road, will host the online talk “Awareness Inspires Conservation: White Sharks with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy” at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday via Zoom.
Learn about the work of the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy and their ongoing white shark research that takes place off Cape Cod, and how the presence of white sharks has affected these communities.

Community group hosting yard sale Saturday

Hawthorne Community Association will sponsor a fundraising yard sale from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Hawthorne House, 40 Hawthorne Road, corner of Cape and Hawthorne Roads.
Proceeds from sales will help with needed repairs to the boyhood home of Nathaniel Hawthorne.

UNITY
Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association will offer two online homesteading classes this week.
“Sustainable Beekeeping for Your Small Apiary” will be offered from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday. This webinar will focus on producing, growing, and wintering nucleus bee hives to replace winter losses. Topics will include splitting hives, wintering over nucleus colonies, identifying signs of swarming and acting to prevent it, as well as tips for raising healthy winter bees and a brief discussion on small-scale queen production. This class is aimed at intermediate level beekeepers – those with several seasons under their belt and a familiarity with the tasks of a beekeeper. Cost is $40, sliding price scale available.
On Friday, a “Mothers Who Farm” group will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. online. This free discussion group is for anyone wanting to connect with others about raising children while farming.

All-Rachmaninoff concert with choral groups

Bay Chamber Concerts will present a virtual all-Rachmaninoff concert at 5 p.m. Monday, featuring members of Down East Singers and Bowdoin Chorus and guests on YouTube channels.
A video recording of members of Down East Singers has been produced, with the chorus gathered in an open field in Cushing in observance of safety guidelines for vocalists. Videographer Luke Fatora has produced two such films, weaving in views of the St. George River and the surrounding landscape, with images of the singers, dramatically led by conductor, Anthony Antolini. The chorus is accompanied by a brass ensemble and keyboardist Jennifer McIvor.
A chamber music interlude will feature cellist Matthew Smith, pianist Peipei Song and violinist Jesse MacDonald.
Viewers are invited to tune in for free to YouTube to view the concert on either Down East Singers’ channel or that of Bay Chamber Concerts. The broadcast will remain available to audiences to view at their convenience.
