Make a ‘grand’ gesture
Summerfest will be held in Windham this year, but it will be a modified version of the event.
The Summerfest Committee is collaborating with local businesses and organizations to provide Windham residents the opportunity to celebrate the summer season in a fun and safe family environment. A parade is planned for 2021, but it will be a “Yardi Gras” parade that promises to be an interesting and unique experience.
The committee is also in search of a grand marshal for the occasion, a Windham citizen who has made a significant contribution to our community. If you know someone deserving of the honor, submit a nomination to the committee by May 15. The grand marshal will be announced at the June 8 Town Council meeting that will be televised live at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 7, WCCG TV.
For information on how to make a nomination, call Windham Parks & Recreation at 892-1905 or email kscrowe@windhammaine.us.
Stop and smell the lilacs
If you’re a senior who loves the sweet scent of lilacs, you won’t want to miss the trip to the lilac garden at Pineland Farms being sponsored by the Windham Parks & Recreation department.
You’ll see 34 different lilac varieties in a bucolic setting and then enjoy shopping and lunch at Pineland’s gift shop and café after you finish the garden tour.
The bus will leave Town Hall at 10:30 a.m. May 19 and will return at approximately 2 p.m. The cost for this wonderful excursion is just $12. Lunch is not included in the price. To register for the trip, call Parks & Recreation at 892-1905.
Have fun with history
The Windham Historical Society is looking for community-spirited individuals who might like to volunteer a little time to help with improvements to the Village Green Living History Center.
The village has been growing steadily over the past few years and there is much to do to get it ready to open to the public. For example, there is painting to be done on the little yellow South Windham Library and there is carpentry work on the inside of the building as well. The Old Grocery needs to be cleaned and repairs need to be made so it can be opened looking like a mercantile of the late 1800s. The gazebo could use staining and the grounds could use a little weeding. If you have a green thumb, help is also needed to plant some flowers around the grounds. The list goes on and on. If you’d like to learn a little about Windham’s past and have fun while doing so, call the society at 892-1433 and lend a hand.
Playdates in the park
With the weather getting warmer, Windham Parks & Recreation is bringing its popular Kiddie Gym program outdoors to comply with the most recent health protocols. Children age 5 and younger will enjoy meeting new playmates and playing with outdoor toys provided by Parks & Recreation. The program begins on May 6 and runs on Thursdays from 10-11:30 a.m. at the Town Hall Playground until June 10. The cost is $2 per session per child. Since the governor has lifted the mask requirement in outdoor settings, children will not be required to wear masks. However, families may continue to wear face coverings if that is their personal preference. For more information, call the Parks & Recreation department at 892-1905.
