A public hearing on the proposed 2022 combined town/school budget in Scarborough Wednesday night took place without any comments from the public at all.
“It was curiously quiet,” said Town Manager Tom Hall.
The budget, originally unveiled on April 7, stood at $77.1 million, which would have led to a 7.74% increase in the tax rate, but by the time the council did its actual first reading on April 14, Hall said, officials had cut the bottom-line amount to raise via taxes by $3.4 million, holding firm to a 3% increase to the tax rate. If that stands, the tax rate per $1,000 of assessed value would climb from $14.86 to $15.30. For the owner of a $300,000 home, that means an increase to the tax bill of $132.
The council took no action on the budget at its May 5 meeting, but said second reading and final vote was expected to take place on May 26.
