University of Maine women’s basketball standout Blanca Millan has signed a training camp contract with the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.
Millan, the two-time America East Conference Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, joins Cindy Blodgett and Jamie Cassidy as Black Bears who have signed with a WNBA team.
“We could not be more proud and excited for Blanca,” UMaine Coach Amy Vachon said in a statement. “She has worked so hard for this opportunity. She is one of the best ever to play at UMaine and is the third Black Bear to have the opportunity to compete in the WNBA along with two of the best ever – Cindy Blodgett and Jamie Cassidy. We are so excited to follow her journey and cheer her on! Blanca has always set her goals high and we are so excited to watch her chase her dreams!”
The first player to be named America East Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year twice, Millan finished her career as fifth in scoring at Maine with 1,974 points.
A native of Santiago de Compostela, Spain, Millan was named the NCAA International Player of the Year by World Exposure Report and was a finalist for the 2021 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.
Millan, a three-time America East first-team selection, finished the 2020-21 season ranked 15th in the nation in scoring at 21.4 points per game.
She also was 15th in the nation in steals per game (2.90) and earned her third-straight selection to the America East All-Defensive Team.
The fifth-year guard finished her UMaine career with eight double-doubles, 96 double-digit scoring performances, 42 games with 20 or more points, and six 30-plus scoring outings.
