Library offers online programs, in-person tax aid
The Wells Public Library will offer the following online programs this week:
Children’s programs will include a Jaded YA Reads session at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tweens, teens, and adults can listen along as one of the librarians reads a young adult novel chapter by chapter. The week’s book is J.R.R Tolkien’s fantasy classic ”The Hobbit.” Listen at: anchor.fm/wells-library-ya or contact Meghan Osmolski at mosmolski@wellstown.org. Also, Mother Goose Storytime will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday on Facebook and YouTube. Children, ages 24 months and younger, and their caregivers are invited to engage in lap activities, rhymes, songs, and fingerplays.

Solo violin concert to be livestreamed on Friday
A livestream solo violin performance by 240 Strings co-founder Tracey Jasas-Hardel, of the Portland Piano Trio, will be offered at 7 p.m. Friday
The 60-minute performance will feature the music of two cutting-edge modern composers Kenji Bunch and Missy Mazzoli.
Jasas-Hardel has been studying, performing and teaching violin for 35 years. Her passion for the instrument has led to numerous awards, performances, recordings, and teaching positions.

Learn about Maine’s Malaga Island
The Old Berwick Historical Society will present an online lecture about Maine’s Malaga Island at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Presented by Kate McBrien, deputy secretary of state for archives at the Maine State Archives in Augusta, the talk will explore the history behind the 1912 incident, when the State of Maine evicted a community of African-American and white residents from their homes on Malaga Island. Racism, economic struggles, and eugenics all led to the devastation of this group of people.
Participants can register at oldberwick.org. Admission is free to members, with a $5 suggested donation for nonmembers. The lecture is open to the public.

Club’s Horticulture Series to end with seed-starting talk
The Camden Garden Club Winter Horticulture Series will conclude with the talk “Seed Starting 101” at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday. The Camden Public Library will host the program on Zoom and anyone wishing to attend should email jpierce@librarycamden.org to request a Zoom link.
Anne E. Perkins will discuss how home gardeners can successfully propagate plants from seeds and will demonstrate tips and techniques. Perkins, a member of Camden Garden Club since 2010, is the owner of Headacre Farms in Owls Head.

Author of ‘War Pigeons’ to present slideshow and talk
Camden Public Library will present an online program for history-lovers and bird enthusiasts alike at 6 p.m. Thursday. Author Elizabeth Macalaster of Brunswick will provide an illustrated slideshow discussing her new book, “War Pigeons: Winged Couriers in the U.S. Military, 1878-1957.”
For more than 70 years, homing pigeons provided the U.S military with its fastest most reliable means of communication. Trained by pigeoneers to fly up to 60 mph for hundreds of miles, homing pigeons served our country in four wars on four continents.

Palaver Strings return to Rockport Opera House
Bay Chamber Concerts will present the virtual premiere of Coral Suite, featuring Palaver Strings, Dana Lyn and Kyle Sanna, airing at 7 p.m. Thursday, and streamed virtually from the Rockport Opera House on Bay Chamber’s YouTube channel.
In Coral Suite, Lyn and Sanna create an audiovisual poem for the reef, calling attention to the urgent need for its protection. In this unique collaboration, Coral Suite is newly orchestrated for fiddle, guitar, and full string orchestra.
Tickets are pay-what-you-wish and can be purchased online any time before 5 p.m. Thursday. Ticket buyers will receive an email with the link to watch the premiere on the day of the performance and the concert will be available to watch anytime for one week following the premiere.

Music festival to air discussion between directors, alumni
Bowdoin International Music Festival will offer “Keeping up with Festival Alumni Serena Canin, William Fedkenheuer, and Astrid Schween” from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday via Zoom.
Join this online conversation between artistic directors David Ying and Phillip Ying and Festival alumni from three internationally renowned string quartets. The artists will reflect on their experiences as students at the Festival and discuss their musical journeys since. The conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Webinar to address pandemic and vaccine process
Mid-Maine Chamber will partner with Alfond Youth & Community Center, Central Maine Growth Council, Kennebec Valley Council of Governments and KV Connect to offer a virtual informational webinar addressing the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccine process. The forum will be held on Zoom from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and will address questions regarding the vaccine rollout and next steps.
The panel of speakers will include Dr. Steve Diaz, chief medical officer, MaineGeneral Health; Dr. James Jarvis, physician leader, Incident Command, Northern Light Health; and Lisa Landry, Esq., human resources director, Redington-Fairview General Hospital. They will provide an overview of where we are in the pandemic, what hope is on the horizon, employment-related issues and considerations, and what steps we can all take to get beyond the present challenge. A Q&A will follow.
