RAYMOND — For those looking to reel in the big one, the Sebago Lake and Cumberland County Fishing Derbies are scheduled for this weekend on Sebago Lake and all legal waters in Cumberland County.
Derby officials confirmed this week that the derby on Sebago Lake will take place, but continued to caution fishermen to check the lake’s ice depth often as conditions can change quickly.
Proceeds from the annual derbies, hosted by the Sebago Lake Rotary Club in cooperation with Maine Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, will benefit a number of charities, including the Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn, the RSU 14 Backpack Lunch Program and Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
Registration and weigh stations will be open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There will be three weigh stations: at Sebago Lake Landing Station on the shores of the Lower Bay in Standish, Jordan’s Store at 8 Sebago Road in Sebago and Raymond Beach at 1234 Roosevelt Trail in Raymond.
To register, visit icefishingderby.com/derby-registration. Entry fees are $25 per individual or $35 for families of up to two adults and four children. Registration is open until noon on Feb. 20.
The Polar Dip is also taking place this Saturday from 12 to 3 p.m. at Raymond Beach. Participants can take the plunge to support Feed the Need, a local initiative working to eliminate hunger in the Sebago Lakes Region. 100% of the funds raised will benefit 13 food pantries across the area.
To register, visit icefishingderby.com/polar-dip. All participants must register ahead of the event and will be given a specific time slot.
