NEW GLOUCESTER — Former Selectman George Colby submitted his written resignation Feb. 2, Selectboard Chairperson Karen Gilles confirmed earlier this week. Colby verbally resigned at the Feb. 1 meeting at which the Selectboard was slated to set a date for his recall election.

Gilles said that the board will vote to formally accept his resignation and cancel the March 30 election at their next meeting on Feb. 22.

In Colby’s brief letter, obtained by the Lakes Region Weekly, he wrote, “I would like to say I am sorry that the attacks on me overshadowed the awards received by Sharlene Myers and Kimberly Getchell. They are so very underappreciated. The work they do that is unseen by the public and by the Board of Selectmen is massive. I say to them publicly from the bottom of my heart, thank you.”

Gilles said the Selectboard will discuss at their next meeting on Feb. 22 whether to hold a special election prior to the next municipal election or leave the seat vacant until then.

This story has been corrected to reflect the Selectboard’s process for filling vacant board seats.
