John Balentine’s column “What’s a conservative to do?” (Jan. 29), leads me to believe that if Balentine were a math teacher, he’d proclaim that one plus one equals three.
He cites the “still unresolved questions” about Georgia’s results in the presidential election. Actually, they were resolved, according to several top Republican Georgia election officials and nearly 60 lawsuits. Even Attorney General Bill Barr said there were no major flaws. Trump promulgated the “election was stolen” lie, parroted endlessly by the “conservative” media heroes who Balentine recommends.
Balentine champions “people who love freedom more than security.” Did Balentine champion the freedom of the armed domestic terrorists who invaded the Capitol at the urging of their idol, the conservative President Trump? Actually, Trump is no conservative; the deficit ballooned to record levels under Trump’s “leadership,” and he consistently broke Constitutional norms, once prized by true conservatives.
Balentine suggested that because of Democratic principles, Republicans have to “swoop in and rescue the damsel Lady Liberty in distress.” Actually, Biden now has to do the swooping because of Trump’s horrendous response to the coronavirus, just as Barack Obama had to clean up after George W. Bush’s mess.
Mr. Balentine, it wasn’t the “biased media” talking when GOP Rep. Liz Cheney said of Trump’s culpability in the Capitol invasion, “There has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States of his office and his oath to the Constitution.”
Remember Lindsay Graham’s warning words during the 2016 presidential campaign: “Trump is a wrecking ball to the future of the Republican Party.” Lindsay nailed it.
Mr. Balentine, let’s first agree on the facts, like one plus one equals two and Trump lost the election; maybe then we can discuss policy issues. Thank you.
