FREEPORT — Arts and Cultural Alliance of Freeport has received a $100,000 Maine Economic Recovery Grant to help offset revenue losses due to the pandemic, but fundraising efforts to aid renovations at Merrymeeting Arts have begun anew and are ongoing.
Arts and Cultural Alliance of Freeport has begun renovating the Main Street floor of the First Parish Church into a community arts center that will provide performance and gallery space and seating for 200.
According to Nancy Salmon, president of the Board of Directors of ACAF, the new venue at 40 Main St. was unable to reach its initial fundraising goal earlier in the year due to the economic impact of the pandemic. Renovations are not expected to be completed until February and ongoing health and safety concerns make it unlikely that in-person programming will be possible before late spring.
“In addition to ongoing fundraising efforts, this grant will help to support the renovation process and will expedite the opening of Meetinghouse Arts once the State’s guidelines for safe opening permit it,” Salmon said on the Alliance’s website.
