BOWDOINHAM — Incumbent Rep. Seth Berry, D-Bowdoinham, defeated Republican Peter Lewis of Bowdoinham in the race to represent House District 55.
Berry won the seat representing Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and part of Richmond Tuesday by an unofficial tally of 3,244-2,642. Berry drew 55% of the votes in House District 55 and Lewis drew 45%.
Lewis took the majority of votes in Bowdoin, which favored him 943-908. However, Berry won the majority votes in both Bowdoinham and Richmond.
Berry first won the seat in 2006 and won reelection until he was ineligible to run due to term limits in 2014. Berry then ran for and won the seat again in 2016 and 2018.
Berry said he and his campaign team worked hard to respect people’s health and privacy during the COVID pandemic, resulting in less door-to-door campaigning than is typical.
“I think, generally speaking, Democratic candidates were more cautious about going door-to-door and that did pose some challenges,” he said. “Especially where most landlines are disconnected and people understandably won’t answer the phone during an election.”
Berry said he believes that challenge is reflected in statewide results where it appears Democrats, who traditionally rely on door-to-door campaigning, appear to have lost at least three House seats, though they still maintain control of both chambers.
“I’m very honored, given those headwinds, that the people of Bowdoin, Bowdoinham and Richmond saw fit to reelect me by a wide margin, and I will work hard to be worthy of that trust and confidence,” Berry said Wednesday.
While Lewis lost his bid to the House but was reelected to the Bowdoinham Board of Selectmen Tuesday.
