BELFAST — Brunswick’s Will Shaughnessy won the boys Tournament of Chanmpions high school cross country race, leading the Dragons to their second straight team title at the event at Troy Howard Middle School on Saturday.
Shaughnessy finished in 15:32.86. Bangor sophomore Daniel McCarthy (15:41.72) was second, followed by Falmouth’s Ben Potter (15:45.99), Cape Elizabeth’s Jack Bassett (15:50.36) and Falmouth’s Ben Greene (15:59.17).
“I felt comfortable making a big move around the mile, or even sooner,” Shaughnessy said, “and, I don’t know, I just never looked back. I went for it.”
Shaughnessy’s win was only the start for the Dragons. Brunswick also got a seventh-place finish from Tyler Patterson, a 14th-place finish from Joey Valliere and a win in the freshman race from Eli Palmer (17:18.55), lifting it to 105 points and a team win over York (192), Bangor (197), Scarborough (225) and Falmouth (292).
“You’re just watching people warm up and you’re seeing how great the other athletes are,” Brunswick coach Dan Dearing said of the deep field that included several teams from throughout New England and Canada. “To beat these teams is quite an accomplishment. Anything can happen week to week, this was our day and it’s really humbling to win something like this, because the competition is so good.”
Sofie Matson of Falmouth won the girls race for the third straight time, finishing in 17:35.91. Siona Chisholm of JH Gillis High School in Nova Scotia was second at 18:08.60, followed by Ava Thurston of Harwood Union (Vermont) at 18:16.72, Falmouth’s Karley Piers at 18:23.22 and Maine Coast Waldorf’s Olivia Reynolds at 18:42.
Girls soccer
CUMBERLAND — Rachel Wall scored two goals, including the tying goal with 37 seconds remaining in regulation, to lift the Freeport High School girls soccer team to a 2-2 Western Maine Conference draw with Greely on Friday.
Chelsea Graver and Paige Evans had a goal each for the Rangers (3-5-1).
Tia Peterson and Tara Migliaccio assisted on the Freeport (8-1-1) goals, while Elise Ekowicki had five saves in the Greely cage and Leah Rusiecki 28 stops in the Falcon cage, including a save on a penalty kick and the ensuing rebound.
Freeport hosts York on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Richmond 7, Vinalhaven 0
The visiting Bobcats improved to 6-3 with an East-West Conference win at Vinalhaven/North Haven on Saturday.
Abby Johnson tallied a hat trick, with Bry Shea adding two goals and two assists. Lorelei Zoulamis and Lindsie Irish chipped in a goal, with Rylie Irish adding two assists.
Richmond host Temple on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Brunswick 3, Mt. Blue 0
Isabella Banks tallied two goals to power the host Dragons to a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference victory over the Cougars on Saturday.
Molly Taub chipped in a goal for Brunswick (6-2), with Alex Bunker and Emma Banks adding an assist each.
Aisley Snell made five saves for the shutout.
Brunswick hosts Edward Little on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Wiscasset 2, Mountain Valley 1
The Wolverines improved to 2-8 with a Mountain Valley Conference win over the Falcons on Saturday.
Cara Viele and Latisha Wright scored Wiscasset’s goals, while Sophie Ladd tallied for Mountain Valley.
Wiscasset visits Oak Hill on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Boys soccer
RICHMOND — The Richmond Bobcats opened a busy weekend with an 8-1 Class D South win over Greater Portland Christian on Friday.
The Bobcats turned around and traveled to Vinalhaven/North Haven on Saturday, securing a 4-1 victory and a 7-1-1 record ahead of Thursday’s home matchup with Traip Academy (4 p.m.).
Andrew Vachon tallied three goals and an assist against GPC (0-8), while Dakotah Gilpatric and Justin Vachon chipped in a goal and two assists apiece. Max Viselli, Kyle Tilton and Chance Taylor also had a goal. Tilton made two saves in the Richmond cage.
Ethan Doan scored the lone goal for the Lions.
Cony 1, Mt. Ararat 1
At Topsham on Saturday, Mason Brigham scored the lone Eagles goal in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference tie with the Rams.
Logan Butler scored on a penalty kick to tie the game, and goaltender Calvin Vacus made 10 saves for Cony.
James Singleton turned away three shots in the Mt. Ararat (4-4-2) net.
The Eagles travel to Messalonskee on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
Brunswick 3, Mt. Blue 2
The visiting Dragons picked up a key KVAC win over the Cougars on Saturday at Mt. Blue.
Brunswick is 9-1 and visits Edward Little on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
Scoreless late in the first half, Lane Foushee scored his first of three goals off a setup from Alfonso Miguel.
Five minutes into the second half, the Dragons made it 2-0 as Liam Driscoll set up Foushee.
Jack Murray and Xander Platt tallied a goal each to tie the game for Mt. Blue before Foushee put the Dragons ahead to stay with a bar-down header off a cross from Sebastian Miguel.
Jack McDiarmid made 10 saves for the win, while Cougar netminder Xander Garney had 12 stops.
Field hockey
BETHEL — Maddy Tuplin and Sadie Hardt netted a goal each to lift Lisbon to a 2-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Telstar on Friday.
The Greyhounds are 2-9 and host Hall-Dale today at 3:30 p.m.
Tuplin added an assist, while Lisdbon goaltender Maria Levesque made one save for the win.
Telstar (1-11) goalie Perry Morton made three saves.
Brewer 3, Brunswick 2
Caitlin Cook gave the host Witches a two-goal second half as Brewer held on for a KVAC over the Dragons, who fell to 5-6 and host Morse today at 3:30 p.m.
Sara Scrapchansky scored both goals for Brunswick, with Delia Braillard and Lauren Jacobs each earning an assist.
Liberty Krauss turned away six shots for Dragons.
Ally Crawford and Emilie Ireland each tallied a first-half goal for Brewer (3-8), with goaltender Madison Diaz making seven saves.
Girls volleyball
Falmouth secured a 3-0 win over Brunswick/Mt. Ararat on Saturday, picking up set wins of 25-11, 25-15, 25-20.
The Dragons are 1-8 and host Cheverus Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Sabrina Cooper picked up three kills, one block and one dig for Brunswick, with Lauren Whitlock adding eight digs and four aces. Kathleen Trapp secured three aces, three kills and two digs.
Cony 3, Mt. Ararat 1
Goals by Julia Reny, Faith Leathers Pouliot and Ana Reny lifted the visiting Rams to a KVAC win over the Eagles on Saturday.
The Eagles had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 8-3 ahead of Tuesday’s home matchup with Brewer (3:30 p.m.).
Holly Temple scored off a Brea Holtet assist for Mt. Ararat, while netminders Emma Lapreziosa (eight saves) and Lily Schenk (three saves) manned the Eagles net.
Emily Douglas turned away eight shots for Cony.
Football
FRYEBURG — Calvin Southwick had three touchdown runs as Fryeburg Academy downed Morse, 40-10, in Class C South action on Saturday.
The Raiders improved to 2-3 behind Southwick’s TD runs of 1, 10 and 16 yards. Issac McKenney added a 49-yard interception return early in the first quarter, Bryce Micklon ran it in from eight yards late in the third and Job Fox added a 28-yard touchdown run in the fourth.
The Shipbuilders (1-4) got a 25-yard field goal from Asa Hodgdon and a 25-yard scoring pass to Gabe Aucoin from Mason Savary, both in the second quarter.
Morse returns home Friday to face Cape Elizabeth at 7 p.m.
