LEWISTON — Bates scored with under two minutes remaining in regulation to force a 1-1 tie with Bowdoin in men’s college soccer action on Wednesday evening at Garcelon Field.
The Polar Bears moved to 2-1-2 (0-1-2 NESCAC) with the deadlock, while the Bobcats now stand at 3-1-1 (1-1-1 NESCAC).
Bowdoin scored in the 23rd minute as Julian Juantorena redirected a shot by Dylan Reid, after a Bates foul gave Bowdoin’s Harry Cooper a free kick from 35 yards in front of the Bates goal. His long ball resulted in a scramble in front that came to Reid, who rifled a shot that Juantorena put home to give the Polar Bears the lead.
Bowdoin seemed ready to go ahead 2-0 in the 71st minute when a turnover in Bates’ defensive third resulted in Charlie Ward’s shot against Bates netminder David Goodstein. But the netminder deflected the ball away to Jason Oliver, whose follow shot was sent back to Goodstein for a second save in a matter of moments.
Bates evened the game during a late assault on the Bowdoin goal. After a series of passes, Myles Guerrier tapped a feed to Jacob Iwowo, who one-timed a solid left-footed volley into the right side of the net, where Bowdoin keeper Michael Webber had no chance to put a hand on it.
Bowdoin outshot Bates, 5-1, over two overtime periods, but none were on target.
Michael Webber made seven saves in his collegiate debut for the Polar Bears, while Goodstein made five saves for Bates.
