On vacation with her family from Tennessee, it was Marjorie’s first-time apple picking and her first trip to Maine. This early in September, the Paula Reds are the ripest apples, according to owner Brad Sprague, and the Macintosh will follow shortly after. By Sept. 25, the Honey Crisp, their most popular apple, should be ripe, though Sprague said this year the apples are about 10 days behind. It’s still been a good season so far, with busy weekend days, and more to come. By the end of the month they will be at their busiest, he said, with hundreds of cars parked on the road and a long line for baked goods, especially apple cider doughnuts, which they might sell as many as 3,000 of on an average weekend day.
