SACO — Jack Clements has been sworn in as Saco’s new police chief.
Clements, 50, was hired as a deputy police chief in 2017, and served as interim police chief after former Police Chief Ray Demers retired on June 14. He has 30 years experience in the field of law enforcement.
Clements was unanimously recommended for the chief position by an interview team that included the city administrator, human resources director, fire chief, a city councilor, a corporal from the Police Department and the director of Age Friendly Saco.
The City Council on Monday night unanimously confirmed Clements appointment, after which he received a standing ovation.
The new police chief was sworn in a short ceremony at the Saco Police Station on Tuesday.
“Since joining us in 2017, he’s been an amazing asset to the community,” said Public Works Director Patrick Fox, who kicked off Tuesday’s ceremony. “It’s a real honor and we’re glad to have you on board,” he told Clements.
Clements said he looked forward to continue working with such a great group of people who are dedicated to their jobs and care about the community.
“ I’ve been humbled by working here,” he said.
The Saco Police Department has begun a strategic planning process that involves the input of all the police workforce, said Clements. Through this process they have developed department values and are working collaboratively to develop agency goals, he said.
Clements was raised in Kennebunk and began his law enforcement career as a police officer in Windham, before moving to Nevada for a position with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. While working in Las Vegas, Clements held various positions, including detective, community policing sergeant, executive sergeant for the office of the sheriff, lieutenant of convention center area command, lieutenant for K-9 and mounted patrol, lieutenant of central robbery and lieutenant for air support/search and rescue.
Clements said he moved back to Maine after retiring from Las Vegas because he and his wife are from this area and they wanted to raise their two children in a place with an a exceptional school system that is safe and provides many recreational opportunities.
“I am confident the interview team made the right choice in naming Jack Clements as Saco’s new police chief,” said Mayor Marston Lovell in a written statement. “Clements’ reputation as a fair but firm officer who always leads by example resonated through his colleagues’ comments about his character, knowledge, and experience.”
Jean Saunders, Director of Age-Friendly Saco said in a written statement that Saco was fortunate to have Clements as its new police chief.
“Jack’s scope of experience, as well as the leadership qualities he brings will serve the citizens of Saco well. His vision and passion for his work is demonstrated daily,” she said.
The Police Department has the equivalent of 52.5 full-time positions, including 34 sworn in officers.
