Midcoast Literacy recently celebrated its 49th year providing free literacy services in the Midcoast region. Newton Blakesley and Cyndy Lewis of Westport Island were recognized for their combined 29 years of volunteer service. Blakesley and Lewis served as volunteer tutors for clients from Elmhurst in Bath, assumed a variety of roles on the board of directors and worked to support Midcoast Literacy’s mission: improving lives through literacy.
A new annual award, Outstanding Tutor of the Year, was created and named in their honor. Livy Glaubitz of Phippsburg was the first recipient of the award in recognition of her participation as a tutor of children in the Read Together program. Two students in the Read Together program, Cleora Tarbox of Woolwich and Yalnerol Malove of Brunswick, received the Outstanding Participation awards.
