SACO — Two people were seriously injured in separate motorcycle crashes on Saturday, one in the northbound lane of the Maine Turnpike in Saco and another on Bonny Eagle Road in Hollis.
Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said Diane Sprague, 42, of Saco sustained multiple injuries on Saturday morning when the motorcycle on which she was a passenger collided with debris from a car that had struck a concrete barrier in front of the bike.
McCausland said the driver of the car, Norman Watson, 22, of Windham, told Maine State Police Trooper Mike Cook that he fell asleep while traveling in the northbound lane.
The impact of Watson’s car striking the concrete barrier ripped the front bumper off his vehicle and it flew into the path of the motorcycle, said McCausland. The motorcycle operator, Ronald Boucher of Saco, 46, sustained minor injuries.
The northbound lanes of the Maine Turnpike were closed at the crash site for four hours, reopening at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, McCausland said.
In a separate incident, Michael Gemmell, 37, was injured on Saturday night when he lost control of his motorcycle just after 7:30 p.m. when the bike overturned. Gemmell was thrown from the bike and sustained multiple injures.
Maine State Police Trooper Patrick Hall told McCausland that speed was a factor in the crash.
Both Sprague and Gemmell were taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland.
A Maine Medical Center spokesman on Monday said Sprague was in serious condition and Gemmell was in critical condition.
