SACO – The Thornton Academy boys lacrosse team lit up the scoreboard with a decisive 19-1 victory over Cheverus at Hill Stadium on Friday.
Every Golden Trojan was part of the evening’s success.
“Everybody got a chance to play,” said Thornton Academy coach Ryan Hersey. “In some of our closer games not everybody gets a chance. It’s good to have our line two, line three, and line four kids get some goals, shots and time in, hopefully it’s going to pay off for us later down the road.”
The Golden Trojans came onto the field ready to play from the game’s jump.
Thirty seconds into the first quarter, CJ Labreck scored.
Seconds after, Anthony Bracamonte drilled a ball into the Stags’ net.
With 8:39 left in the first period, Ethan Hammond scored to put the Cheverus on the scoreboard.
Then, the rest of the game returned to being all about the Golden Trojans.
Thomas Levasseur scored three goals in two minutes to create a 5-1 lead going into the second quarter.
The Trojans then go on a 14-0 run throughout the rest of the match to produce the final 19-1 score.
“We focused on getting the ball around and getting everyone involved especially kids that haven’t got a lot of playing time,” said Bracamonte. “It was a good game and a lot of fun for everyone.”
Levasseur led the Trojans with five goals and two assists. Samuel Edborg finished with three goals and two assists. Preston Briggs added three goals, while Bracamonte and Julien Bailey Cottle chipped in two apiece. CJ Labreck, Gavin Tanis, Spencer Bergeron and Gabe Older all finished with one to secure the win for the Trojans.
Hammond led the Stags with one goal.
Thornton Academy was able to open up the game by running plays performed during practice instead of relying on the talent of individuals.
“Cheverus is rebuilding this year so we were really trying to run our plays rather than run individual one-on-ones,” said Hersey. “Running our plays is what’s going to make us better and for the most part we did it but every now and then a kid took it and shot it when we could’ve run a play.”
Bracamonte agreed with his coach.
“They’re a good team but we knew coming in that we needed to focus on the little things like running the plays correctly,” he said. “I thought it was a good learning experience for us.”
The Trojans improved to 6-1 with the win, while the Stags drop to 1-7.
Thornton Academy will travel to University of New England to play Kennebunk on Monday, while Cheverus hosts Sanford.
“We want to continue to do what we asked tonight,” said Hersey. “Run the plays and continue to get better as a team rather than rely on an individual.”
