KENNEBUNK — The Planeteers of Southern Maine and the Kennebunk Conservation Commission will host “Hands Across the Sand” at Mother’s Beach in Kennebunk on Saturday.
“Hands Across the Sand” is a yearly event begun by a restaurateur in Florida in 2010 in response to the BP oil rig disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. It has grown into an international happening that promotes green alternative energy sources and opposes petroleum industry processes that present environmental threats to the world’s lands and waters.
The event is a 15-minute gathering of people lined up, hand-in-hand, in a silent expression of agreement about the need to reduce and prevent petroleum-related pollution.
Immediately afterward, there will be a one-hour cleanup of area beaches. The organization will have some gloves and trash bags, but participants are encouraged to bring their own.
The event will be one of more than 60 being organized around the globe on that day.
