WATERBORO – Thornton Academy scored 12 runs in the first and cruised to a 14-4 win over Massabesic in five innings on a cold Tuesday evening. The Golden Trojans scored early and often, putting the first run on the board when Luke Chessie scampered home from third base on a passed ball.
“A team like Massabesic you just want to try to put up runs early and get ahead,” said Thornton Academy coach Jason Lariviere. “We hit the ball really well in the first inning. It was a team effort offensively; everyone was putting the ball in play.”
The Trojans capitalized on nine hits to build the double-digit lead before the Mustangs even got to the plate.
Hits by Liam Nash, Cameron Cross, Toby Pydych, Derek Madore, Cody Bowker and Cameron Seymour powered the big first inning. Massabesic didn’t help their own cause, committing a trio of errors in the field.
“We’re still making too many physical and mental mistakes,” said Massabesic coach Cory Woodsome. “You can’t make those kinds of mistakes against any team in the league and you definitely can’t do that against quality teams. When you make mistakes like that, good teams are going to take full advantage of it. That was the perfect example in the first inning.”
During the second inning, the Mustangs would try to rally with four runs. Jason Guinard, Cameron Dyer and Braden Daigneault powered a 12-4 score with RBIs.
Cameron Cross put on a show for the Trojans. The senior knocked in five runs on three hits to secure the victory for Thornton Academy. Cross drove in runs on two singles in the first, a groundout in the third and a single in the fifth to create the final 14-4 score.
Chessie earned the win for the Trojans. He pitched 1 and two third innings and gave up three hits and four runs while striking out one. Bowker threw 3 and one third innings in relief.
“I think Chessie threw well,” said Lariviere. “This is a warm-up game — he’s going to pitch Saturday (against Scarborough). Bowker came in and did a good job, he’s only a freshman so he’s got a bright future ahead of him.”

The Mustangs racked up seven hits. James Lessard and Nicholas Roberge had two hits each.
“We’ve just got to keep grinding,” said Woodsome. “We’ve got six more games to go and we only have one win on the season at this point. I think there’s some teams on the schedule over the next two weeks that we should be able to be very competitive with.”
The Trojans improve to 8-2, while the Mustangs drop to 1-9.
Thornton Academy will host Westbrook, while Massabesic travels to Biddeford on Thursday.
“Any team can beat anyone,” said Lariviere. “Our pitchers are lined up to give us the best opportunity to win so we’ll see how it goes one game at a time.”
