Mt. Ararat wins 2
in recent SB action
TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat Middle School eighth-grade softball team was busy last week, earning a pair of victories.
On Wednesday, the Eagles hosted Lewiston, pulling away for a 19-7 victory.
The game was close in the fourth, with Mt. Ararat holding an 8-7 lead. The Eagles scored seven runs in the fifth to gain some distance.
Hannah Hawkes led the offense with five hits (double, four singles, three runs scored). Alex Durant contributed with two singles. Ella Davies chipped in a double, and Regan Robertson, Piper Cohen, Abbie Doble, Alexis Wheeler and Lexie Dupre all hit singles. Robertson used her aggressive baserunning to score four runs, and speedy Dupre crossed the plate three times.
Robertson pitched three innings, getting four strikeouts and allowing four walks, three hits and four runs. Dupre pitched one inning and had two strikeouts, two walks, one hit and three runs. Hawkes pitched two innings and had five strikeouts, one walk and permitted no runs to clinch the win.
Mt. Ararat hit its home field again on Thursday, this time picking up a close 9-7 over Oxford Hills, giving the Eagles a 2-1 record.
Mt. Ararat outhit the Vikings, 11-4.
The visitors struck for four runs in the first, but Mt. Ararat answered with hits from Robertson, Davies and Hawkes. Each scored to move the Eagles to 4-3 after an inning.
Mt. Ararat shut down Oxford’s offense in the next three innings with Robertson striking out three. She received strong defensive work from Dupre and Durant.
The Eagles claimed the lead in the second, putting up three runs. Alexiw Wheeler walked, followed by consecutive doubles by Dupre, Robertson and Davies.
Oxford Hills battled back to tie the game, 6-6, in the fifth. Mt. Ararat answered one more time in the bottom of the frame. Allie Hunter walked, stole second and scored on a single by Abbie Doble.
The Vikings knotted the game in the sixth. The Eagles regained the lead for good in the home half of the sixth. Dupre walked and Davies singled for the go-ahead RBI. Hawkes made it a two-run game with a line-drive single.
Hawkes struck out two batters in the Oxford Hills seventh and Doble came up big with a solid catch in the outfield to secure the win.
Robertson pitched three innings, getting four strikeouts, three walks, three hits and four runs. Dupre pitched one inning (one strikeout), and Hawkes finished with three solid frames (eight strikeouts, two walks, one hit, three runs).
Davies had two singles, a double and an RBI, Hawkes three singles and an RBI, Robertson a single, double and two runs batted in, and Doble a pair of singles.
Mt. Ararat travels to rival Brunswick today and hosts Auburn on Tuesday.
Vikings edge Eagles
in baseball action
TOPSHAM — Playing its third game in a week, the Mt. Ararat Middle School eighth-grade baseball dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Oxford hills recently.
Lukas Holman, Luke Spooner and Brady Merrill took the hill for the Eagles, combining on five hits and three walks, holding to the Vikings to just one earned run.
Oxford Hills pitcher Eli Soehren pitched a complete game no-hitter.
Shea Farrell played well behind the plate for Mt. Ararat, while Landon Chase, Nick Picard and Ryan Staples were solid in the outfield.
Mt. Ararat opened its home slate with a 12-7 extra-inning loss to Lewiston on Wednesday.
Trailing 7-1 in the fifth, the Eagles scored six runs to tie the game.
Mt. Ararat had opportunities to win, but Lewiston made a couple solid plays to send the game to extra frames, where the Blue Demons tallied five runs.
Labbe goals lifts Brunswick to lax tie
BRUNSWICK — Tommy Labbe scored with less than one second remaining in the fourth quarter as the Brunswick High School jayvee boys’ lacrosse team finished in a 10-10 deadlock with Scarborough recently.
Sean Lyne led the Dragons with three goals, while Jake Jones, Max Rudgers and Gus Silverman all chipped in with two goals.
Albie Putnam won 7-of-9 faceoffs.
Bowdoin softball
receives honors
BRUNSWICK — A trio of Bowdoin College softball players have been recognized in All-NESCAC awards handed out by the conference on Thursday.
Kasey Cunningham, Maddie Rouhana and Ruby Siltanen were all recognized as Second Team All-Conference choices.
Rouhana, a sophomore, led the NESCAC with 43 RBIs this year, batting .361 with 16 doubles, five home runs while striking out just 10 times in 119 at-bats.
Cunningham enjoyed a breakout first-year campaign, ranking among the NESCAC leaders in batting average (.391), stolen bases (22) and runs scored (31). She also boasted a .431 on-base percentage.
Siltanen was one of the top pitchers in the conference, going 11-3 with a 1.69 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 87 innings pitched. She also batted .300 with three home runs this season for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin finished another outstanding season with a record of 26-11, taking second in the NESCAC East Division.
Brunswick JV softball
rallies for big win
BRUNSWICK — Down 11-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Brunswick High School jayvee softball team scored seven runs for a 12-11 victory over Edward Little recently.
Sarah Poutree had the walk-off hit to lift the Dragons (3-2).
Sabrina Cooper started the game on the mound and gave four good innings. Emma Lind pitched two strong innings, and Katelyn Austin pitched the seventh to earn the win.
Lind had three hits, and Riley Smith and Emma Thoits each had two. Sarah Johnson tripled and singled twice.
