LEC track honor

GORHAM — The Little East Conference announced its final set of weekly men’s track and field honors Monday afternoon with University of Southern Maine sophomore Zach Hoyle being selected as the Track Athlete of the Week, and the Huskies’ 4 x 400-meter relay squad being picked as the Relay of the Week.

This was the fourth time during the spring outdoor season that Hoyle has been the recipient of the Track Athlete of the Week honor.   

The relay foursome of junior Donivyn Harms, senior Justin Pierce (Mt. Ararat High School), junior Jack Ricker and Hoyle was recognized for the second time this season.

Competing at the New England Division III Championships held this past weekend at Williams College, the relay team finished sixth with their season-best time of 3:21.43.

Qualified competitors will travel to Southern Connecticut State University this Friday and Saturday to compete in the NEICAAA New England Outdoor Championships.

Bath MS earns
8-7 baseball win

BATH — The Bath Middle School baseball team improved to 2-1 with an 8-7 win over Fryeburg Academy on Monday. 

The Destroyers took a three-run lead in the bottom of the second with hits by Jason Bussey, Zack Carpenter and Braylon Williams. 

Fryeburg battled back in the top of the third with three of its own runs.

The Raiders led 7-3 after four before Bath began to rally. Andrew Card smacked a double, scoring Wyatt Wallace-Craney and Gavin Baillargeon to make it a 7-5 game going into the sixth inning. 

Braylon Williams pitched a clean sixth to bring Bath to the bottom of the sixth. Calin Gould, Zack Carpenter, Kiernan Mann and Baillargeon reached on three walks and a hit batter. Gabe Morrisson, Card and Wallace-Craney all walked and brought in three runs for an 8-7 lead.

Wallace-Craney came in to pitch the top of the seventh and earned a save by striking out the side.

Bath had solid pitching by Mann, Williams and Wallace-Craney, combining for 12 strikeouts. 

Bath will host Old Orchard Beach on Thursday at Varnum Field.

Bowdoin tennis teams
to host regionals

BRUNSWICK — Both the Bowdoin College men’s and women’s tennis teams have earned hosting rights for this weekend’s Division III regional finals. 

Play begins Thursday in the men’s first round as Yeshiva (14-7) takes on Eastern Nazarene (16-7) at noon. The winner faces Bowdoin (16-4) on Friday 1:15 p.m., followed by TCNJ (15-3) vs. Skidmore (15-5) at 4 p.m.

The regional final is slated for Saturday at 1:15 p.m. If Yeshiva advances to the regional final, play will be held on Sunday. 

In women’s play, the opening round is Friday as Nichols (13-0) meets Colby-Sawyer (12-6) at 8 a.m., followed at 10:30 a.m. by SUNY New Paltz (12-0) and Husson (10-0). 

On Saturday, Bowdoin (14-5) takes on the Nichols vs. Colby-Sawyer victor at 8 a.m., with MIT (16-3) meeting the other first-round survivor. 

The regional final is set for Sunday at noon. 

Vandersea awards
to be held May 22

BRUNSWICK —The Howard Vandersea Maine Chapter of the National Football Foundation has announced its 2019 Major Award winners.

The Distinguished American Award goes to Travis Mills, United States Army Staff Sergeant (retired), while the Football Officials Recognition Award will be presented to C. Warren Forbes. The John Wolfgram Coach of the Year Award (2018) winner is Jacob Rogers of Nokomis Regional High School

These three award winners will be honored at the Chapter’s 32nd annual banquet at Bowdoin College’s Thorne Hall on May 22 at 6 pm.

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame is dedicated to mobilizing the constructive forces of amateur football, at all levels, for the benefit of society as a whole. The Howard Vandersea/State of Maine Chapter has been honoring scholar-athletes since its establishment in 1988.
