BRUNSWICK — The Bowdoin College softball team locked up the second seed in the NESCAC East standings following a 5-1 win over Bates to close out the regular season.

The Polar Bears are 26-10 (8-4 NESCAC) after sweeping the three-game series against the Bobcats (14-20, 5-7 NESCAC).

The Bobcats scored first in each of the three games during the weekend, including Sunday’s third-inning RBI single. Janell Sato singled up the middle to plate Caroline Bass for a 1-0 lead.

Bowdoin responded in the fifth inning as former Mt. High School standout Katelyn Cox singled up the middle to plate Caroline Sablone.

It took eight innings to decide a winner, with Bowdoin scoring four runs in the eighth to notch the win. Ruby Siltanen had a two-run double to left to break the deadlock.

Sablone drove in Siltanen and Cox later plated Sablone.

Siltanen pitched all eight innings and allowed seven hits with five strikeouts.

Payton Buxton allowed 14 hits and five runs for Bates.

Kasey Cunningham joined Cox with a stolen base. Karlye Pallotta went 2-for-5. Allison Rutz went 3-for-4, while both Siltanen and Sablone were 2-for-4. Bass and Sato were both 2-for-4 for Bates.

The second-seeded Polar Bears will play against the third-seeded NESCAC West Amherst team at noon on Saturday. All playoff games are being played at Tufts.

Baseball

The Sunday baseball games scheduled between Bowdoin and Amherst were canceled due to poor field conditions.

This included the suspended game from Saturday that was cut short in the top of the seventh inning. The game goes down as a 1-1 tie.

Bowdoin will return to action on Tuesday afternoon at home against the University of Southern Maine. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Women’s track

Bowdoin took third place at the New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday, its best finish at the league meet since 1993, at Middlebury, Vermont, on Saturday.

The Polar Bears totaled 109 points to finish behind only Williams (165) and Middlebury (145.5).

Bowdoin claimed two NESCAC champions at the meet — Brittney McKinley, who broke a school record in winning the 100-meter dash (12.03), and Sara Ory, who won the 400 hurdles (1:05.35). McKinley also took second in the 200 (25.77) and was also part of Bowdoin’s 4 x 100 relay team that took second overall in 49.55 along with Morgen Gallagher, Angela Wallace and Samantha Schaefer.

Additionally, the 4 x 800 meter relay squad of Delaney Bullock, Abigael Osmanski, Claire Traum and Caroline Shipley was a second-place finisher as well in a time of 9:35.17. The 4 x 400 team of Emma Beane, Gallagher, Schaefer and Ory took third place in a time of 4:01.70. Individually, Beane took third place in the 400 (59.20).

In the field events, Lydia Pitts was second in the triple jump (36-08.25) while Belinda Saint Louis was third in the shot put (38-07) and Leah Matari third in the javelin (118-11).

Bowdoin will compete at the New England Division III Championship this upcoming weekend at Williams College.

Men’s track

The Polar Bears placed sixth at the NESCAC Championship on Saturday at Middlebury College.

The Polar Bears totaled 60.5 points to take sixth place overall. Middlebury won the title with a team score of 201 points.

Individually, Reed Foster took second in the long jump for Bowdoin with a distance of 22-06.5.

The men’s 4 x 100 team had Bowdoin’s best relay finish of the day, taking second in a time of 42.77 thanks to Mason Freeman, Owen Tuck, Troy Green and Yaw Sekyere.

Sean MacDonald placed third in the 10,000 meters in a time of 31:37.55 for the Polar Bears. Joseph Staudt took third in the high jump with a height of 6-04.75

The Bowdoin men also head to the D-III New England Championships at Williams.

Men’s tennis

Bowdoin closed its regular season with an impressive 6-3 road win at Williams on Sunday afternoon.

The eighth-ranked Polar Bears finished their regular season with a record of 15-3 after dispatching the ninth-ranked Ephs.

Bowdoin grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles action as Justin Patel/Oscar Yang earned an 8-5 win and Grant Urken/Jerry Jiang posted a crucial 8-7 win at No. 1 doubles.

Bowdoin’s top three singles positions earned quick wins to finish off the Ephs. Urken pitched a perfect 6-0, 6-0 straight-set win at No. 1, followed by Jiang (6-4, 6-3) and Yang (6-2, 6-1). Justin Patel accounted for the other Bowdoin victory — a 7-6, 4-6, 12-10 win at No. 5.

Bowdoin rallied for a 7-2 victory over Tufts on Friday.

Trailing 2-1 after doubles, the Polar Bears swept the singles competition. 

The Polar Bears will learn their seeding for next weekend’s NESCAC Tournament early this week. The championship will be hosted at Middlebury College.

Women’s tennis

Bowdoin defeated Williams in a battle of top-10 teams on Saturday afternoon.

The seventh-ranked Polar Bears closed out their regular season with a flourish, defeating the Ephs and improving to 12-4 on the season.

The Polar Bears won two tight doubles matches — Izzy Essi/Tasha Christ 8-7 at No. 2, and Fleming Landau/Sarah Shadowens 8-6 at No. 3 — to take a lead into singles play.

From there, Devon Wolfe, Essi and Sasa Jovanovic earned straight-set wins to clinch the victory. Wolfe (6-2, 6-1), Essi (6-1, 6-1), and Jovanovic (6-3, 6-0) all had convincing wins while Landau won by default at the No. 6 position.

Bowdoin will learn its seeding for this weekend’s NESCAC Championship at Middlebury College early next week.

Women’s lacrosse

Bowdoin failed to mount a late rally and fell to Amherst, 12-9, in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC Tournament on Saturday.

The Polar Bears (9-7) will have to await word on a possible NCAA Tournament bid when selections are announced on May 8. 

The Mammoths (12-4) advanced to the conference semifinals next weekend.

Amherst opened the game on a 3-1 run to take an early lead after ten minutes of play.

Bowdoin answered with a 5-1 run to end the half, sparked by a Fiona Bundy goal. Katie Miller scored twice to end the surge, including a goal with just 2:21 remaining before halftime to give the Polar Bears a 6-4 lead at the half.

Amherst came out firing in the second half as a pair of Hannah Fox goals keyed a five-goal run over the first nine minutes, giving the Mammoths a 9-6 lead.

Bowdoin got within two goals on three occasions, including 11-9 with 8:27 to go on a Maggie Savagescore, but were unable to get closer.

Miller had four goals to lead Bowdoin in scoring. Kara Finnerty had two assists and three draw controls. Kate McAloon and Paige Brown had three caused turnovers apiece for the Polar Bears, who received 10 saves from Erin Morrissey in the loss.

Hannah Fox scored six goals to lead all players for Amherst.
