OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Construction is slated to begin this week for sewer improvements on Evergreen Avenue in Old Orchard Beach.
In March, the Town Council approved spending $618,000 for sewer work in the Evergreen Avenue area.
In 2018, public works department staff used cameras to conduct inspections of sewer lines in many of the streets in the area, according to town documents. The residential area, commonly referred as the Old Campground Neighborhood, is densely populated with older homes along narrow streets.
The inspection identified several structural problems in sewer lines in this area, and residents in the neighborhood have also reported sewer issues including plugged lines, according to town documents.
Work will begin this week on a sewer improvement project on Evergreen Avenue, 11th Street and Fort Hill Avenue, said Town Manager Larry Mead at Tuesday night’s Town Council meeting. The work will include the replacement of sewer pipes and service connections, said Mead.
Mead said residents should take note of posted signs in these streets when work is underway.
Work on the project will be conducted between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.
“During construction, sewer service will need to be disconnected and reconnected to properties,” said Mead. “(The) town will coordinate with property owners on site during this period to reduce flows while re-connection is being completed.”
If anyone has any concerns regarding the project, Mead said to call his office or the public works office.
This project is separate from a larger sewer project on Washington, Fern and West Old Orchard avenues that is expected to begin in 2020.
Another, unrelated project in town will also move forward soon. On Tuesday night, the Town Council approved spending about $31,000 for striping roadways and parking lots. As much of the project as possible will be completed before Memorial Day and the striping will be completed by mid-June, said Mead.
