OLD ORCHARD BEACH — A Kennebunk man charged with stealing an elderly woman’s purse has turned himself into police.
Jeffrey Stevens, 30, of Kennebunk, surrendered to the Biddeford Police Department on Tuesday, according to a press release from Old Orchard Beach Police. Stevens is currently being held at the York County Jail in Alfred on the charge of robbery, a Class A felony. According to police, he was unable to make bail, which was set at $5,000.
Stevens arrest came after a public request for assistance in determining his whereabouts by police, according to police.
Stevens has been charged with robbery in relation to an incident reported around 2:30 p.m. on Monday regarding a strong-armed robbery that occurred just outside the doorway of Cafe 64, a coffee shop and bakery at 64 Saco Ave., Old Orchard Beach, according to police.
Stevens is being accused of approaching an elderly woman in front of the coffee shop, grabbing her purse and after a brief struggle, running away with the purse and leaving in a car, according to police.
Stevens was identified as the suspect in the alleged robbery after a police investigation, according to police. Police issued a warrant for Stevens’ arrest on one count of robbery,
Police were able to recover the victim’s purse during. They are continuing their investigation into Stevens to see if he was involved in any other recent crimes in the surrounding area.
