BIDDEFORD — A panel of three judges reviewed an amazing impressive array of creativity and faced some tough decisions in choosing the winners of the 2019 Biddeford Student Art Show.
Held every other year, this year’s art show highlighted individual pieces of student artwork in mediums ranging from sculpture to papier-mâché to weaving to acrylic painting. More than 2,000 visitors toured the exhibition at Biddeford Middle School over two days last week.
The judges decided that they wanted one winner per course taught, meaning the 2-D and 3-D art classes at both the high school and middle-school levels will be added to the schools’ permanent art collection.
In all, a total of seven awards were presented among 2,000 pieces of artwork exhibited, making students, their teachers and their parents proud of what had been created.

For John F. Kennedy Memorial School, judges selected a paper collage created by Dakota Delisle as best in its category, while a depiction of a loon in mixed media by Emilia Zawakis was chosen as the best in category for Biddeford Primary School.
A drawing of birch trees by Annabelle Jacques was honored as the best in category for students attending Biddeford Intermediate School.
Two creations by Biddeford Middle School students were honored as best in category including “Tiger Taxidermy” by Kayleigh Keely and “The Little Mermaid” painting by Rebecca Hatt.
Best in category for Biddeford High School students were “Painted Woodland Path” by Brianna Adams and “Blue Jay Sgraffito” by Paige Laverriere.
Biddeford schools employ six art teachers throughout the district and the subject remains an important part of school curriculum. Students use a variety of tools and techniques to explore art and artists and their contributions to society.

The biannual art show showcases all talented students in the Biddeford School System and the art program is intended to give students dexterity, skill, inspiration and enhances hand-eye coordination all while helping them develop concentration, which also can be applied to academic subjects they take.
Student volunteers and art teachers spent weeks mounting artwork for the exhibition and two days gathering it for display and placement in the show.
Art on display during the event showcased student talent in printmaking, watercolors, pop art, still life, drawing from observation, along with acrylics, paper mâché, relief sculpture, weaving, clay and mixed media. Every classroom that uses art was represented from Kindergarten students to high school seniors.
The 2019 art show also highlighted some exceptional student art weavings which were hanging in the main school hallway at Biddeford Middle School during the exhibition. The 3-D creations used recycled materials and their color choices depicted the Saco River.
The panel of judges were Biddeford Schools Superintendent Jeremy Ray, former State Rep. Marty Grohman and Donise McGinn, a retired art teacher from the Biddeford School District.
