RINDGE, N.H. — Brunswick’s Josh Dorr helped Franklin Pierce University men’s lacrosse to an 11-10 victory over Saint Michael’s College recently.
Mike Alibrandi scored the game-winning goal with four seconds to go in regulation as the Ravens collected the win at Sodexo Field. With the win, the Ravens record moves to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Saint Michael’s broke the scoring column first four minutes into the game after an interference penalty was called on Pierce. The Ravens responded with five straight goals, two dumped in by St. Laurent and the final marker, a Dorr’ s feed to Alibrandi for the catch and shoot chance pushed FPU ahead 5-1 early in the battle.
Dorr has five goals and three assists on the young season. The sophomore scored five goals in nine games last year as a freshman for the Ravens
The Ravens conclude their three-game homestand on Saturday when they welcome Bentley University for a noon showdown.
Glover scores goal in Springfield lax win
Amherst, Mass. — Former Brunswick High School standout tallied his fourth goal of the season for Springfield College during a 22-8 loss to host Amherst College recently.
The Pride slipped to 2-6 on the year as it dropped its third-straight outing. The Mammoths improved to 8-0 and entered the game ranked No. 2 in the the most recent USILA National Poll. It marked the third team that Springfield has clashed with that has been ranked in the top 10 in the national poll.
Glover has netted four goals and seven assists in in eight games this spring.
Springfield will return to Stagg Field for the first time since March 2 when it hosts Emerson, slated for 1 p.m.
Freeport’s Rinaldi tallies assist for USM
SALEM, Mass. — Senior Aliza Jordan and junior Megan Violette combined for nine goals to lead the visiting University of Southern Maine women’s lacrosse team to a 15-6 non-conference victory over Salem State University under the lights Thursday evening at Alumni Field.
The win snapped a two-game losing skid for the Huskies, and improved their overall mark to 2-3 heading into Saturday’s (12 p.m.) Little East Conference opener at Eastern Connecticut State University. The Vikings dropped their fourth consecutive game to slide to 1-6 on the season. The Vikings open conference play on Saturday (12 p.m.) at Worcester State University.
With the game tied at 2-2 with 14.26 to play in opening half, it took the Huskies just 18 seconds to regain the advantage on a goal by Alex Farley, set up by rookieTaylor Rinaldi. Farley’s marker sparked a run of five USM goals in less than six minutes. Violette, Jordan and freshman Evelyn Hinkley converted on free-position opportunities within a span of 3:38 to increase USM’s lead to 6-2. Jordan closed the run of Husky goals, converting a feed from Keenan.
Murtagh lifts men’s lacrosse over Endicott
BRUNSWICK — First-year Will Murtagh scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team to an 8-7 comeback win over Endicott recently at Whittier Field.
The Polar Bears snap a two-game losing streak with the win and improve to 5-3 this season. Endicott falls to 2-6 with the setback.
Defense dominated the day as the neither team could create separation throughout the contest and the squads combined for 52 turnovers on the night.
The Gulls took an early two-goal edge thanks to early scores from A.J. MacDonald and Neal Parry, but Bowdoin trimmed the lead to 2-1 with a score from Jeff Powers at the end of one quarter.
After Jack Sutherland boosted Endicott’s lead back to two goals early in the second quarter, Bowdoin got a pair of goals from Jake Crossman and Powers just 58 seconds apart to deadlock the contest at 3-3.
Endicott used a 3-1 surge in the final 8:20 of the opening half, including goals by Sutherland and face-off specialist Derek Yannone just 10 seconds apart, to regain the lead at intermission, 6-4.
Murtagh scored the lone goal of the third quarter for Bowdoin, closing the gap to 6-5 entering the final period.
Crossman gave Bowdoin its first lead of the night, tying the contest with a goal at 3:26 and scoring the go-ahead goal with 2:27 on the clock.
Sutherland replied for Endicott, taking a feed from John Koebel and putting the game into overtime with a score at 1:27.
Both teams had chances to win it in overtime, but Bowdoin’s A.J. Bravo forced a turnover on Endicott’s second possession of OT and carried the ball downfield. The ball came to the wing for Murtagh, who cut across the Endicott defense and beat goaltender Patrick Dean for the game-winner with 1:12 left in the extra session.
Cossman and Powers had three goals apiece in the win for Bowdoin.
Faceoffs were tied at 9-9 for the day and Bowdoin held a slim 32-30 edge in shots. Both teams went 0-for-2 with the extra man.
The eight goals in the victory for Bowdoin were the lowest scoring output in a win for the Polar Bears since a 6-5 overtime victory against Wesleyan in 2013.
Bowdoin returns to NESCAC play on Saturday as they head to Hartford for a 1 p.m. contest at Trinity.
Fortson steps down at Bowdoin College
BRUNSWICK — Head coach Tomas Fortson of the Bowdoin men’s squash, women’s squash and men’s golf teams has announced that he will resign at the conclusion of the 2018-19 academic year.
Fortson has been the head coach of the squash programs for the last 19 years and has led the men’s golf program for the last 16 seasons. He will step down to pursue his dream of becoming a golf club professional.
“We are grateful for Tomas’ work in support of our students in our men’s and women’s squash and men’s golf programs during his 19 years at the College,” said Ashmead White Director of Athletics Tim Ryan. “Tomas emphasized personal growth through sport with our students and built and maintained a wonderful squash community at the Lubin Center, which has served as a gathering place for students, faculty, staff and local community members. We wish him well as he pursues the next chapter in his professional career.”
On the squash courts, Fortson steered the men’s team to 197 wins and the women’s team to 210 victories over the last 19 seasons and is the winningest coach in program history for both squads. On the course, he helped guide the Bowdoin men’s golf team to three top-five finishes at the NESCAC Championship.
The College will conduct a national search for a new head coach of the squash and men’s golf programs.
