Brunswick — The Brunswick Parks and Recreation department recently held its Die Hard Baller basketball tournament at the Rec Center.
Boys and girls teams competed at the third and fourth grade level, as well as a boys division in the fifth and sixth grade team.
Teams from Auburn/Lewiston, Bath, Brunswick, Medomak Valley, Mount Desert Island, Mt. Ararat, Oak Hill, Rockland and Yarmouth competed in the two-day tournament.
3rd and 4th girls
The team from Bath was led by Cheyenne Shipley’s 12 points over its two games, while Molly Cosgrove netted six and Hailey Bonang had two.
Brunswick earned a win over Medomak Valley (18-16) to open the tournament. Julianna Morin paced the victors with 10 points, followed by Maddison Watson’s six. Meridan Lacasse added a bucket.
Auburn nipped Brunswick, 20-19 in the second game of the morning on Saturday. Elizabeth Wright led Brunswick with nine points, while Morin and Watson added six and four, respectively.
In the loser’s bracket, Brunswick broke a tie game at the break and cruised to a 23-12 win over Medomak Valley. Watson and Wright each poured in eight points, followed by Morin’s five and Jackie Johnson’s two.
In the final, Auburn pulled away from a 14-13 halftime lead to hold on to beat Brunswick, 24-20. Morin scored a game-high eight points, followed by Watson’s seven and Wright’s five.
3rd and 4th boys
In the opening game, Yarmouth used an 8-4 second quarter to build a 15-9 halftime lead and held on to beat Brunswick, 27-20.
Brunswick was led by Declan Theberge’s six points, followed by Rylan Ley’s four. Gabe Parnell added three points, while Oliver Gorchoff, Micah
Greenwald, Liam McGrath and Liam Rapoza each had two points apiece.
Brunswick rolled to a 50-4 victory over MDI in its second game of the day.
Parnell and Matthew Lebrec paced Brunswick with 10 points each as 10 different players hit the scoring column in the win. Asher Foushee, Rapoza and Rylan Ley scored six points each, while Porter netted four in the win. Oliver Gorchoff, Sam Mullins, Theberge, and McGrath each scored a basket.
5th and 6th boys
Brunswick opened the tourney Friday with a 40-23 win over Oak Hill. Trevor Gerrish scored a team-high 11 points, followed by Judah Greenwald’s eight points. Nate Eggerling and Trevor Campbell each chipped in with seven points apiece. Lucas Labrecque netted six points, followed by Keegan Cummings three points.
Brunswick earned its second win Friday evening with a 41-34 victory over Rockland. Eggerling paced Brunswick with 10 points. Gerrish netted eight and Reece Turgeon and Labreque each had six. Guard Cam Beal chipped in with four points, while Cummings scored three and Josh Foye and Greenwald split four points.
Mt. Ararat earned its first victory with Friday’s 31-20 win over Medomak Valley. Eight different players registered points in the scoring column, led by Nicholas Brady’s six points, followed by Ethan Berry’s five. Kurt Coen, Caleb Murphy, Nicholas Creek and Andrew Clemons each tallied four points apiece. Timothy Hahesy and Joe Kessler split four points down the middle.
In a Saturday morning clash, Mt. Ararat downed Brunswick, 44-32 to advance to the title game. Clemons led Mt. Ararat with 13 points, with Brady adding 10. Coen scored eight points, while Murphy added seven. Berry chipped with four points and Creek had two.
Eggerling paced Brunswick with 13 points, with Gerrish tossing in eight for the Dragons.
Brunswick clinched its spot in the tournament final with a 44-41 win over Medomak Valley. Gerrish scored 14 points with Judah Greenwald adding 12. Cummings and Eggerling each tallied nine points apiece in the win.
In the final, Mt. Ararat jumped to a 26-15 halftime lead and never looked back. Murphy led all scorers with 17 points and teammate Clemons netted 10 in the win. Brady and Hahesy each tallied six points, while Coen, Creek and Berry scored four points, respectively.
For Brunswick, Judah Greenwald led the Dragons with 10 points, followed by Eggerling and Turgeon’s six points each. Gerrish netted four points, while Tyler Maxim drained a trey for three points. Brendan Shaw and Labrecque each sank a free throw in the loss.
