YORK COUNTY — From the arts and literature to history, nature and beyond, York County Senior College has choices that fit a variety of interests for those over 50.
Prospective students will have a full line-up of classes given at locations throughout Sanford and Springvale as well as in Saco at the Trinity Episcopal Church, and University College. There are also classes at Huntington Common in Kennebunk and in Biddeford Pool. Classes begin the first week of April and most run for eight weeks.
There are classes two days a week in the Sanford/Springvale area. Arlene Jackson leads Wednesday’s class at the Springvale Library, the popular “Bring a Book to Breakfast,” where readers will study a variety of books aimed at provoking thoughtful discussions. On Fridays, Kevin McKeon takes participants “Out in the Woods” to explore natural areas around Sanford.
The remainder of the Sanford/Springvale classes take place at the Anderson Learning Center on Fridays. They include Dr. David Moberg’s “Open Art Group,” welcoming beginners and advanced artists to come together and work in their own media. The popular “Writing Memoirs,” is a way to capture and share your legacy under the guiding hand of Fleurette Bannon. Also that morning, students can view “Ted’s Favorite Classics,” facilitated by Ted Hargrove and highlighting a variety of classic movies that will be viewed and examined. Rounding out the Friday morning classes is a four-session study of “Photography,” where the use of camera equipment will be explored with Millett Day.
Afternoon offerings include Fred Boyle’s “Great Decisions” class, featuring a discussion-based analysis of current world affairs, a chance to learn about your ancestry by “Discovering Your Family Roots,” with Brother Albert Heinrich, and an opportunity for “Exploring the Arts in Cuba,” via experiences with the music, art and dance of the county with Zenaida Maicas.
Monday afternoons will find seniors in Kennebunk learning under the guidance of Mike Berkowitz in “Psychology Looks at the Movies IV,” offered at Huntington Common. Active seniors who enjoy biking can “Discover the Eastern Trail by Bike” along with Joe Yuhas on Thursdays.
On Tuesdays, Bradley Coupe assists beginners and intermediate artists in “Watercolor Painting: Making Water Behave.” This class takes place at the Biddeford Pool Community Center. Also at the Community Center are two additional courses. Tuesday afternoon features professional career consultant Dr. Al Shinkel assisting seniors in “Goal Setting – Planning for Retirement. On Wednesdays, classes on “Birdwatching for Fun and Relaxation” begin at the Community Center and include walks to nearby locations.
Those wishing to find classes in the Saco area can choose from a selection offered from Tuesdays through Thursdays.
Start off at the University College in Saco Tuesday morning with “Open Art Studio” at Trinity Episcopal Church, a workshop session with Pat Scammon and Clara Martel and Ray Lund, where beginners and experienced artists will get one-on-one support in reaching their artistic goals. Also at the Church that afternoon is a six-week class in “Beginning Watercolor,” a teaching/learning experience with Linda K. Thompson. The UMA Saco Center is the site for the last Tuesday class, Dana Peck’s historical look at “Pepperell — The Melting Pot.”
UMA’s Saco Center is the site of two Wednesday classes. Mornings feature “The Movie Music of the 50’s and 60’s,” with instructor Lorraine Massure. In the afternoon, the arts continue with Rev. Jan Hryniewicz and participants in Reader’s Theater … “Acting Up!”
Also in Saco on Wednesday mornings, those who want to reflect on their lives can do so with Anne Murray in the 6-session class “The Long and Winding Road,” which takes place at Trinity Episcopal Church.
Completing the York County Senior College schedule is “Midsomer Murders: An Examination,” with Kathleen Harder as tour guide for this “Whodunit?” based on the British detective series. This class meets Thursday afternoons at UMA’s Saco Center.

The mission of York County Senior College is to provide a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for people 50 years of age or older. Begun in 1999, Senior College is governed by a volunteer committee who oversees its general operations.
