Editor,
I recently had to take my car to a local automobile dealer for repairs and while I was waiting for the work to be done, I noticed a flagpole at a business across the road that was flying a very tattered American flag.
While I commend the business for flying the flag, I would recommend to them that they either take it down at night or not fly it during severe snowstorms. It’s apparent that this business never takes its flag down regardless of the season.
The poor condition of this particular flag made me look up rules for flying the flag and for what it’s worth, I’ll pass this along.
When the flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem, it should be destroyed in a dignified and ceremonious fashion, preferably by burning. The American Legion holds an annual ceremony to retire old or worn flags; and flag owners contact your local chapter if you are not able to dispose of the flag yourself.
Our flag needs to be treated wth respect and although it is honorable that some area businesses choose to honor our nation by flying the American flag, there also comes a time to replace tattered or worn flags.
