WEST NEWFIELD — A fire that displaced two residents on Sunday is believed to be accidental and caused by a candle in a bedroom of a single-family home on Maplewood Road in West Newfield.
The displacement will likely be only temporary. Newfield Fire Chief Jason Neville said the fire was confined to the bedroom and its contents, though there was smoke damage throughout the structure.
There were no injuries, but one of the occupants was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure, he said.
The all-volunteer department was called to the 700 block of Maplewood Road at mid-afternoon on Sunday.
Assisting Newfield Fire Department were firefighters from Limerick and Shapleigh in Maine, and Wakefield, New Hampshire.
“We’d like to thank them for their help,” said Neville.
Firefighters were able to leave the property around 5 p.m., he said.
The homeowners are being assisted by the American Red Cross of Maine.
American Red Cross of Maine spokeswoman Ann Kim said disaster responders were working with the occupants to ensure that they have food, a safe place to sleep and other essentials following the fire.
Over the next several days, the Red Cross will be in contact with the fire victims to provide financial assistance and community referrals as they begin to make their road to recovery, Kim said.
While neither was an issue in this case, Neville reminded people to make sure their 911 address is clearly visible, and to periodically check to make sure smoke detectors are in working order.
