Scarborough High School has won a spot to compete on Maine Public Television’s statewide High School Quiz Show. More than 60 teams entered the competition, and Scarborough made the cut of 16 teams selected to compete on television.
The High School Quiz Show is a single-elimination academic bracket competition with four rounds that test the teams’ general knowledge in science, history, geography, math, English and even some pop culture.

The Quiz Show winner from Maine advances to the regional High School Quiz Show Invitational to compete against champions from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
Some quiz questions for the Maine version of the show come from the College Board, the organization in charge of the SAT.

Other questions rely on local knowledge, with famous Mainers such as recordings of senators Susan Collins and Angus King asking questions, that Maine Public then plays for the students during the taping.
“The Quiz Show tournament gives our Maine students a wonderful opportunity to showcase their academic talent on a statewide show,” said host Shannon Moss. “Every single show I learn an incredible amount.”
Scarborough’s face-off against Oceanside airs at 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, which is also team member Jonathan Hayes’ 18th birthday.

The team is coached by high school Latin teacher, Matthew Davis. Davis also coaches the high school Academic Decathlon team that Eric Youth, Ian Youth and Hayes competed on in 2018, finishing as Maine state championship runner-up.
Scarborough residents are encouraged to tune in Thursday evening and cheer on the Red Storm Quiz Show team.
