WATERBORO — Trailing by three at the half, the Massabesic girls basketball team would take control in the final two quarters and top Biddeford 60-46 on Friday night.
Skylar Renaud put on a show for Massabesic as she scored 8 points in the third quarter and 12 overall to help steer the Mustangs’ comeback.
Renaud was thrilled to pick up the win — especially with Harvard-bound Gracie Martin leading the charge on the other side.
“We just put together a team effort and everybody stepped up to the plate,” said Renaud. “I was pretty excited. It’s pretty hard going up against some who’s going to an Ivy League School.”
Massabesic head coach Chris Aube was impressed with Renaud’s Friday night performance.
“Skylar Renaud was huge on the glass. I don’t know what her point production was, but pretty sure she’s double digits rebounding, got us some good layups, got us to the free throw line and helped us physically,” said Aube.
Martin would score 16 points in the first quarter, including two 3-pointers, to give Biddeford a 22-16 lead going into the second.
“Martin is obviously a player that we needed to pay specific attention to. We had our focus on her,” said Aube.
In the second quarter, Kenzy Ouellette would put up five points to outpace the Tigers 10-7 and cut the Biddeford lead to three going into the second half.
Massabesic dominated the third quarter, outscoring Biddeford 27-10 thanks to a combined 21 points from Marissa Holt, Skylar Renaud, Emily Stinson and Hannah Samson to claim a 53-39 lead.
“I made a few adjustments. Gracie Martin was just throwing it over the top (of our trap) and they were getting layups so we played it a little softer. We did a better job rebounding. Making shots solves a lot of problems,” said Aube.
The Mustangs and Tigers would both score seven points in the fourth to produce the final 60-46 score.
“I thought we got a really great effort from just about everyone. We played some younger kids, both the Jacobs girls (Micaela and Emily) came in at the end of the third and caused some problems, some turnovers. Micaela (Jacobs) had eight points. Kenzie hit a couple of threes to calm us down,” said Aube.
Ouellette finished with 17, while Holt scored nine for Massabesic.
Martin led Biddeford with a game-high 32 points.
“(Massabesic) had 27 points in the third quarter. We always have one segment of time in every game that we kind of let down a little bit. Obviously, it was the third quarter tonight but I’m really proud of the kids, they worked really hard. We did some really good things. For us to put up 46 points in somebody else’s gym was great,” said Biddeford head coach Katie Herbine.
The Mustangs improve to 6-10 on the year, while Biddeford drops to 4-12.
Biddeford will travel to Noble and Massabesic visits Bonny Eagle on Tuesday.
“We have to play our game,” said Herbine. “That’s our goal right now is to put 32 minutes of basketball together, hopefully Tuesday night we can do that.”
