OLD ORCHARD BEACH — National discount store Dollar General has opened a new store at 19 Heath St. in Old Orchard Beach.

The store had a soft opening earlier this week, and will celebrate its official grand opening on Saturday, Feb. 2, according to a press release from the retailer.

Doors will open at 8 a.m. on the day of the grand opening. The first 100 adult shoppers will receive a $10 Dollar General gift card and the first 200 shoppers will receive a Dollar General goodie bag with complimentary product samples. Customers can also register to win a free year of shopping from Dollar General, a prize valued at $520.  A complimentary lunch of hot dogs, chips and drinks will also be served.

“Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development in a prepared statement.  “We hope our area customers will enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”

Dollar General has more than 15,000 stores in 44 states.

Dollar General stores are typically about 7,300 square feet, and carry everyday necessities including cleaning supplies, toiletries and food. The national chain says it keeps its prices low by carefully selecting the merchandise it sells.

“We don’t carry every brand and size, just those our customers want the most,” states the company’s website.

Dollar General stores typically employ six to 10 people, according to the press release.

According to documents from the York County Registry of Deeds, the property at 19 Heath St. is owned by Old Orchard Beach BTS Retail, LCC, a Maine limited liability company with a mailing address in Lakewood, Ohio.

The property previously was the site of an automobile repair shop that had been closed for many years and had, according to Town Manager Larry Mead, been declared an unsafe structure by the town.

The new Dollar General is a short distance away from another national discount store, Family Dollar, which is located at 8 Heath St. A spokesperson from Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar was contacted, and the company had no comment regarding the Dollar General store opening down the street from the Family Dollar store in Old Orchard Beach.
