RICHMOND — No one on the Richmond High School girls basketball team could hit a shot. Not a jumper, not a runner, not a layup.

Somehow, the mystifying slump affecting all of the Bobcats skipped Hannah Moholland. And the senior provided her team all the help it needed.

Moholland scored 20 points, helping Richmond stay afloat during an ice-cold first half and leading the Bobcats to one of their biggest wins of the season, a 45-27 decision over Mountain Valley Conference rival Hall-Dale.

With the win, the Bobcats continued what’s been a late surge. Winless through six games, Richmond has touched the .500 barrier at 7-7.

Caitlin Kendrick added 14 points for the Bobcats, while Macy Carver scored 10. Bryanne Lancaster had 10 rebounds.

“It’s been believing in each other and trusting the process,” Bobcats coach Mike Ladner said. “I just told the girls, as long as we keep doing what we’re doing, eventually we’re going to get the wins.”

Iris Ireland had 11 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (8-5), who were struck by the same offensive woes that ailed Richmond — though coach Jarod Richmond said that was largely the Bobcats’ doing.

“We’ve got to give a lot of credit to that Richmond team. They’re the No. 3 team, defensively, in the conference,” he said. “They showed that tonight.”

The defense was clicking, but the Bobcats were slumping on offense from the opening tip. Richmond shot 1-of-9 from the field en route to a 7-2 first-quarter deficit, and missed 14 of its first 15 shots altogether.

Suddenly, Moholland, a transfer from Oceanside, stepped up. She knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, the second of which gave the Bobcats an 8-7 advantage with 3:56 left in the second quarter, and she had nine points by halftime as Richmond took a 15-8 lead into the break.

She didn’t cool off in the third, scoring 10 points in the period, and this time her team followed suit. After going 5-for-27 from the field in the first half, Richmond went 7-for-15 in the third quarter alone, mounting a 34-15 lead and setting up an easy fourth quarter.

“I think once I actually make some baskets and everyone makes baskets, we kind of just calm down. I think that’s how we got that lead,” said Moholland, who also gathered six rebounds. “We just got a good enough system (going).”

Ladner said the team kept its spirits high, even as nothing seemed to go right for a quarter and a half.

“I just told them to keep shooting. The shots are going to fall eventually, and they started to,” he said. “Hannah had a couple of big shots, and I felt like that was a momentum boost for us.”

Ladner and his team had another reason not to panic.

“We struggled early offensively, but our defense was there,” he said. “Which it has been for most of the season. I kept telling the girls, ‘Just keep trusting the process. As long as our defense is there and we can keep (the deficit) to single digits, we’re fine.’ “

And they were. As badly as Richmond struggled, Hall-Dale had it just as tough. The Bulldogs were only 2-of-13 from the field in the first quarter, then 0-for-12 in the second for a 2-for-25 half. After taking a 5-2 lead early in the first, Hall-Dale didn’t make another field goal until Ireland was fouled making a layup with 6:21 to go in the third.

“They play really good defense, and they forced us into a lot of errors that we talked about not committing,” Richmond said. “I thought our shot selection could have been a little bit better, and our offense we could have executed a little bit better, but Richmond had a lot to do with that too. They have a lot of size and length.”

The Bobcats also got six points from KK Wills, while Olivia Bourque (eight rebounds) and Grace Begin (seven) led the efforts on the glass.

“We really kind of were stagnant offensively tonight,” Richmond said. “I told the girls, we haven’t really had much adversity yet this year. If we want to go where we want to go, and we want to get to Augusta, we have to learn to deal with adversity. But efforts like tonight aren’t going to get us there.”
