OLD ORCHARD BEACH — The Wells boys basketball would nail four 3-pointers as the Warriors worked past host Old Orchard Beach 64-51 on Monday evening.
The Warriors held a slim 28-24 lead at halftime, but the visitors would go on a 21-4 third quarter run to push the score to 49-28 and take control.
The Warriors, who led 21-11 after one, kept a lead throughout the game but during the second quarter, OOB outscored Wells 13-7 to leave the Warriors with only a four-point lead at the end of the half.
Wells would capture the victory, but in the fourth quarter the Seagulls would use multiple free throw opportunities to go on a 23-15 run.
“We got out to a good start in the first quarter then we let off the gas and then we did the same thing in the third quarter. We held on tonight, which was good,” said Wells head coach Troy Brown. “A coach is always thinking to increase the lead not go backwards no matter who’s playing in the game. I thought that we didn’t do a great job of setting up our offense and getting easy buckets. I thought that we made it a lot more difficult for ourselves.”
Tyler Bridge led Wells with 19 points, while Matt Sherburne added nine points. Caleb Corey also chipped in eight points.
“Tyler Bridge had a good game inside. He’s been playing really well this year. I thought Caleb Corey coming off the bench knocking down a few big shots for us, a sophomore guard did a nice job tonight,” said Brown.
Ryan Crockett led the Seagulls with a game-high 27 points, while Zac LaPlante added 10 in the loss.
Old Orchard Beach head coach Matt Regan was impressed with his team’s effort in the fourth quarter. The group made 16 out of 18 foul shots in the fourth quarter.
“We were down 21 at the end of three quarters and then they could have packed it in, but I thought they turned around and played really well,” said Regan. “Ryan Crockett had 27 (points) and he went 17 for 22 from the line, he just didn’t give up and he carried us through the fourth quarter.”
Wells earns a 5-3 record, while OOB drops to 4-6.
“We’re going to forget about this one and prepare for the next one. I told the kids in the locker room that it’s never fun to lose, but I thought there were a lot of good takeaways from it. Playing for all 32 minutes we always talk about and staying aggressive,” said Regan.
The Warriors will host Fryeburg Academy on Wednesday, while The Seagulls will host St. Dominic Academy on Saturday.
“Defense. We played great defense two nights ago against Kennebunk. They’re a very good shooting basketball team and I thought we defended the 3-line really well. It’s going to have to be the same for Fryeburg, they have two good shooters that we’ve got to make sure we don’t let beat us,” said Brown.
