FREEPORT — A 9 a.m. start for a girls high school basketball game on a Friday felt a bit weird.

With students young and old filtering through the Pine Tree Academy gymnasium to catch a peek, the Breakers hosted North Haven in a Class D South matchup, the second meeting between the schools in less than 12 hours.

PTA used a big second-quarter run to take control, then withstood a Hawks rally led by twin freshmen sisters Layla and Mercedes Sparhawk for a 43-35 victory Friday morning.

The Breakers stand at 5-4 after the sweep, which included a 41-24 victory Thursday night.

Pine Tree trailed 13-8 midway through the second quarter. Breakers coach Josh Dayen inserted players into the game in groups of five in the early going, but that all changed when guard Emily Schlisner joined four of the starters. Between Schlisner and Adriana DePalma, PTA battled back, using a quick 18-1 run for a 28-15 halftime lead.

DePalma scored 10 of her team-high 12 points during the spurt, including a pair of long 3-pointers off of Schlisner passes. Schlisner accounted for four points, while Anna Marden, Renee Pickard and Emily Rojas contributed.

Natalie Marden was a defensive stalwart for the Breakers, finishing with seven steals in the win. She felt that it wasn’t difficult to defeat a team in such a short time period.

“It’s tiring, but we worked well as a team over these two games. I think we can beat some of the teams coming up as well,” Natalie Marden said.

The Sparhawk sisters accounted for all 15 of the Hawks’ first-half points, with Mercedes leading the way with nine.

The visitors, who began the two-game set with an 0-6 record, fell further behind to open the second half, as Schlisner, Pickard and

DePalma scored for a 34-15 Breakers lead.

But, North Haven refused to go away. Layla and Mercedes Sparhawk each scored four points during an 8-0 run, and after a 3-point bank shot by Jordan Milano gave PTA a 37-25 edge, the North Haven twins kept scoring, as the Hawks tallied six straight points to close to 37-31 early in the fourth quarter.

“We got a little bit sloppy in the second half,” said Natalie Marden of her team’s second-half performance.

With 3:45 remaining, DePalma fouled out, sending Pine Tree Academy’s top scorer to the bench. After Pickard made a free throw for a 38-31 edge, Layla Sparhawk scored twice on drives in the paint, bringing the Hawks within three, 38-35, with 1:08 remaining.

However, a pair of steals by Natalie Marden and a second trey from Milano finished off the Hawks, giving Pine Tree Academy a three-game sweep of the season series (the Breakers won at North Haven, 35-19, on Dec. 18).

Milano came off the Breaker bench to score eight points, while Pickard chipped in seven and Schlisner six. Elaina Tardiff pulled in seven rebounds and picked up three steals, while Pickard added seven boards and four steals. DePalma had six steals, four assists and five rebounds, with Schlisner dishing out three assists.

Mercedes Sparhawk led the Hawks with 19 points, 15 rebounds, three blocked shots, six steals and two assists, while Layla Sparhawk had a triple-double with 16 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals, along with three assists and two blocked shots. Shayla Arthur picked up eight rebounds, with Kaylee Ames adding four steals. The Hawks held a 47-37 rebounding edge, but committed 39 turnovers.

Pine Tree Academy is slated to host Forest Hills on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
