SANFORD – Development of bicycle infrastructure in downtown Sanford received a boost recently with a $250 pledge from the Sanford Springvale Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber’s directors made the pledge to Sanford Trails Committee after a recent presentation of a new Sanford Trails Master Plan. The top priority in the plan is development of a 1.3 mile Downtown Connector along city streets to connect existing trail networks in two parts of town.
Chamber President Rick Stanley said the chamber believes the project will improve the quality of life in Sanford and bring new visitors to downtown businesses.
“This important project is a piece of the puzzle in revitalizing Sanford’s downtown,” said Stanley. “The Chamber Board of Directors recognizes that and wants to play a role in the development of the Connector.”
Sanford Trails Committee chairman Lee Burnett applauded the chamber for jump starting fundraising efforts to make physical improvements.
Burnett said the goal is to raise $5,000 by mid January toward a grant application. The money will go toward paint for stenciling, signage, landscaping and possibly curb and drainage modifications, Burnett said.
