SANFORD — Harold E. Woodman Sr., 86, of Sanford passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018, at Greenwood Center in Sanford.
He was born on Sept. 20, 1932 to Kirtland and Dorothy (Sprague) Woodman in Effingham, New Hampshire. The family moved to Sanford where he grew up and attended school. He worked as a lumberjack until he was old enough to enlist in the U.S. Air Force, in which he served for four years.
Upon returning from his service time, he went back to work as a lumberjack, and then he started his own carpentry business. As time went on his carpentry turned into making dollhouses. He made all kinds of dollhouses, including replicas of people’s homes and shipped them all over the world. He has one of those doll houses displayed in the Smithsonian Museum. Most recently he was the owner of the What Not Shop in Wells.
In 2000, he married the love of his life, Shirley. Together they enjoyed craft fairs, and antique shopping. They also shared a love for animals and at their home they had birds, fish, dogs, and goats. They found much joy in their farm with their gardens and animals, and having coffee every day with Shirley’s brother Roger and his wife Ann.
His family remembers him as always being busy working around their home and enjoyed keeping the lawns and gardens manicured. Harold and his wife were married for 18 ½ years and together they cared for Shirley’s aging mother for 15 years. More recently, Harold traveled to Greenwood twice daily to visit Shirley since her stroke a year ago. He was a selfless, kind, and loving man and since his passing, the family has found several sweet love notes to his wife.
The family would like to thank the staff at Greenwood Center for their excellent care of Harold and the support they have given to the family.
He is predeceased by his parents, his siblings Helen Matthews, Florence LeBrie, Evelyn Alexandre, Virginia Trafton, and Kirtland Woodman Jr., and a stepdaughter, Kathy Richer- Emerson.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Richer-Woodman; a son, Harold Woodman, Jr. and his wife Kathy, of Springvale; stepchildren, Diane Normand and her husband Mike of Arizona, Danny Richer and his wife Sandy of Sanford, and Scott Richer and his wife Terri of Sanford; a grandson, Tony Woodman of Wells; step grandchildren Jeremy Normand of Sanford, Vikki Normand of Sanford, Justin Richer, of Arlington, Massachusetts, Brin Moore of Wells, Scotty Richer of Sanford, Shaina Morrow of Sanford, and Sarah Kenney, of Sanford; and a brother Robert Woodman.
