Editor,

In the past I have volunteered for many candidates but this year I volunteered to help a York County candidate in his reelection campaign whose integrity, experience and education I strongly supported. Unfortunately, in this campaign the level of vandalism and intimidation by the opposing candidate’s supporters reached a new low.

Of the 20 signs, belonging to my candidate that my friend and I affixed in the Sanford area, 15 of them were damaged with wire cutters. I found the vandalized broken wires and signs thrown on the ground. One evening I noticed the same car parked at different areas where I was putting up signs. That car then followed me home, riding extremely close to my rear bumper the entire way. Unfortunately, the driver sped off before I could get a license plate number.

On Election Day, I was at the Springvale voting location shaking voters’ hands and introducing myself as a friend of my candidate when a woman stepped in front of me and wouldn’t permit me to continue. She aggressively spoke to me irately schooling me in what, she said, was the lawful way to campaign at polls. Her behavior was intimidating so I went inside to speak to the warden about her behavior and how I was campaigning at the polls. She followed me into the building and aggressively interrupted me talking to the warden. During the discussion she lied about what I was saying to voters. Fortunately, upon stating what I was saying to the voters the warden believed me and allowed me to continue.

If the experiences I had while volunteering are any indication of the lawless and bullying type of people who supported my candidate’s opponent, then I truly believe that on Election Day York County fair-minded residents voted for and re-elected a man of integrity.
